to think food bank vans shouldn't have a logo on.

I don't need a food bank, I have used one in the past a long time ago. This is something I feel strongly about. There's a stigma/embarrassment about getting food parcels. In my area, the food bank has a van with their logo and name on it so it's obvious that they're delivering a food parcel. I feel like there should be some dignity allowed and it should be more discreet. I understand about advertising but think it could be done in ways that don't compromise dignity.

It is obvious they are delivering? They could be collecting donations.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 21/01/2025 17:51

In my area volunteers drop off bundles in their cars - the van is only used to pick up donations/move things between Foodbanks.

TwooMuchLabour · 21/01/2025 17:52

I've had food banks deliveries and I wouldn't care if they turned up in a flashing clown car.

I'm grateful for them and the advertising gets them donations.

stichguru · 21/01/2025 17:54

To be honest an unmarked van handing out food, could look suspicious.

TheDeadAndDying · 21/01/2025 17:54

Does it really matter though? Who is staring out of the window seeing what everyone is having delivered....I am at work all day and my neighbours could be running a circus and I wouldn't have a clue 🤷‍♀️
You are also assuming everyone would recognise the food banks logo etc, having never used one I wouldn't know if the van belongs to a food bank or a delivery courier etc.

Snorlaxo · 21/01/2025 17:58

Is the food delivered in bags or a sealed box like Amazon ?

If it’s in bags, then it’s obviously not a supermarket delivery (they use crates and logo vans )

I think that a logo van reminds people to donate rather than as a shame magnet for people receiving deliveries.

Meadowfinch · 21/01/2025 18:02

YABU. A logo'd van gives them valuable advertising space, allowing them to collect food they then hand out.

Most foodbanks are under pressure at the moment, every little bit helps.

I think they should listen to their users and if stigma and shame and embarrassment are bug issues they should think about how to be more discreet. Dignity in people's time of need should be a key consideration not juat as a human quality but also increases the impact of the service

That's what I thought. I feel like it should be private information and they can advertise in ways that dont give away the privacy of people needing food parcels.

The only people who would notice/care are the nosy gossips.
Perhaps they should mind their own business.

Han86 · 21/01/2025 19:31

Maybe it's to normalise it. Seeing a van making deliveries to others in your neighbourhood makes it appear to be ok to ask for help.
A lot of people are still unaware of food banks and may not even realise they deliver (might want to use one but unable to carry items).
Though to be honest I don't generally stand at the window watching what deliveries are going on in my street.

RedHelenB · 21/01/2025 19:41

Yabu. It advertises the service, might help other folk that are struggling.

People who use food banks are already likely to feel “less than”.

Rightly or wrongly, there is a stigma attached and that can lead to the service user feeling shame or embarrassment.

I imagine that there are many families who wouldn’t use the service because of this, even if they were in desperate need.

reyann · 21/01/2025 21:16

I'm sure if I were hungry enough and needed food, the logo of a food bank on the truck would be the last thing on my mind

inigomontoyahwillcox · 23/01/2025 09:02

I run a food bank, our volunteers use their own car to deliver parcels to clients; our van is used to collect donations from donation points across the district. I agree that it should not be made obvious that it's a food bank delivery, if possible, due to the stigma associated with food bank use (we also work within our communities to reduce fear and challenge stigma surrounding food bank use). Most food banks don't deliver, or only do in extenuating circumstances, so it's possible that your food bank is not set up so volunteers can deliver and thus the food bank van is the only option available for deliveries.
