Having agonised over this decision for months I have finally decided that I definitely want my hideous Mirena coil taken out. It has caused me no end of side effects so one would imagine that it would be an easy thing to arrange for it to be removed, right? Bloody WRONG! I rang my GP's surgery this morning to check if it would have to be the Practice Nurse who would do it and was told to call back in 10 minutes so they could go and check. Duly called back to be told that I would initially have to make an appointment for a consultation. Guess when? 20th of May! And Christ alone knows how long I'd then have to wait for a second appointment to take the effing thing out
I'm 41 years old. I know my own mind. This is not a whim. Why is this so difficult?

ok you're scaring me now!

although I know for a fact that the nurse just does it during her normal surgery hours. No extra staff or anything (I had a normal coil years and years ago) - it's the consultation process and sheer timescale that I object to.

is that true Rubyrubyruby? the more I hear about the mirena, the more I want to steer well clear of it.

Good luck vbacqueen, I'm sure it will be fine.

Could you not go to the local family planning clinic instead? That's what I did and they took it out on the spot. They did ask my why, I told them why and they accepted my reasons without further questions.

Could you contact your local family planning clinic, they might be willing to do it for you?

vbacqueen1 · 06/05/2008 10:51

Excellent idea, I shall go off now and investigate.

i tried to have a mirena but after going to gp for it and he couldnt do it,then going to family planning clinic with 2 nurses who couldnt do it and being in lots of pain and passing out, having a different one put in,then being more or less caried to car, being told to take pill and use condoms too until i could have a scan to see if it was in right-i would never ever want to even think of it again!

vbacqueen1 · 06/05/2008 10:59

One can see why too! Horrendous.
There is no one at the FPC until 7pm tomorrow evening but they have a drop in session from then until 8.30pm.
I don't know why I didn't think of it before as that's where I had to go to have the damned thing fitted in the first place. I blame the Mirena coil

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 06/05/2008 11:05

They should have told you when you had the Mirena inserted that it can only be removed by someone who is qualified to do so. That's presumably why the pracice nurse was able to remove your standard one, but can't remove the Mirena.

alibubbles · 06/05/2008 11:07

I asked my GP and she said I'll do it now, 10 seconds and it was out! I felt nothing, then or later, except relief that it was out and felt better than I have for 2 years with it in. Same day appointment to see GP, no waiting.

alibubbles · 06/05/2008 11:08

Mine was a Mirena, fitted by my gynae consultant, but taken out by standard GP who does do family planning.

vbacqueen1 · 06/05/2008 11:09

They didn't say the PN couldn't remove it, just that I'd have to have a consultation about it first (presumably to check that this is what I really want) and it's how long the whole process would take that's pissed me off.
It never occurred to me that she wouldn't be able to remove it - I'm at the GP's next week for my 2 year old's immunisations so I shall check whilst I'm there, just for curiosity's sake.

I took my mirena out myself both times. It practically fell out by itself. I didn't even know you were supposed to get a nurse to do it.

mellyonion · 06/05/2008 11:12

i have heard around and about that the mirena coil is fairly expensive to the surgery, and therefore gp's like you to keep it in for the full 5 years as a cost effective form of contraception!

i really want to get mine out....i feel constantly evil, and its eaten up every single little bit of my sex drive....maybe thats why it works so well!!!

vbacqueen1 · 06/05/2008 11:12

pigleto, don't tempt me! I posted yesterday asking if anyone had ever done that and they scared the bejaysus out of me LOL!

OP posts:
vbacqueen1 · 06/05/2008 11:14

mellyonion, that's exactly how I feel. You don't wear a raincoat every day just because it rains once a year do you?

And it IS evil.

cheesesarnie · 06/05/2008 11:19

cheesesarnie · 06/05/2008 11:22

vbacqueen1 · 06/05/2008 11:24

cheesesarnie, I've also had 3 CS. My 4th baby was born as nature intended

Why do they say you need a consultation? You're a grown woman fgs. Do they think you can't make a decision about your own body without a consultation? I'd get back on the phone and have a go at them. Mention human rights or something.
