Possible pea stuck up nose

My 18 month stuck a cooked pea up his nose at dinner. He sniffed in and snorted it up before I could get to him. It sounded like he snorted it right to the back of his throat and then swallowed it. Obviously I can't be 100% sure that he did swallow it.

I've looked up his nose with a torch and can't see it. I also tried the trick of covering his other nostril and blowing into his mouth and nothing came out.

He's not showing any symptoms so not sure if it's worth a trip to a&e.

AIBU to just keep an eye on him?

not sure OP. would it be worth calling 111 for advice? not sure what they would advise.

Just keep an eye on him. It’ll start to smell eventually if he’s got it stuck up there.

I think you'd be able to see it; my son put a piece of Lego up his nose once. And a dried pea in his ear. The latter we had to go to a&e lol

My DD stuck a tic tac up her nose at a similar age. Her dad wafted a cotton wool ball under her nose. A huge sneeze later and it shot out. He was going to go to A&E if that didn’t work.

I was advised to take my 2 year old to a&e recently with possible sweetcorn up the nose. Was told that if it’s that far up the only way to get it out is sedate them which they try to avoid naturally. It could have been sucked up and swallowed. Was referred to ent anyway which took 2 weeks. She had no symptoms and they said the body may have broken it down naturally anyway. Due to no symptoms they didn’t want to do anything. But general advice is to be seen.

My brother did this as a child. Mum took him to see the nurse rather than A&E.

Thanks everyone. I'm waiting on a call back from 111.

There's a thing called a 'mothers kiss' - basically you blow in their mouth to try to dislodge things from their nose. There's useful instructions if you Google!

That was the first thing A&E got us to do when DD put a pomegranate seed up there Hmm. It didn't work for us, but might be worth a go.

My dd had a couple of trips to hospital years ago, because she enjoyed the fuss. Plenty was up there!

OP says that she has done this.

My child did this with a raisin and I knew it was up there.we had to go to an and e and he had to be put under a general anaesthetic for it to be tweezered out. It was well and truly wedged and by the time we got to a and e they couldn’t see it in there but had to try and get it out to be on the safe side as there is a tiny but significant risk if you leave things up there apparently. He was only under for about ten mins and was fine afterwards.

Well I took him over to a&e last night and they made us an appointment to come back and see ent today. The doctor had a look up his nose but said it seems clear. He agrees he's probably snorted it down the back of his throat and swallowed it. Glad we got him checked out just for the peace of mind.

My brother who is now 53! Stuck a piece of foam from an old teddy up his nose. Mum didn't realise until a foul smell started pervading his bedroom. Had to have a GA to have it removed. No ill effects. Daughter shove a raisin up each nostril when my back was turned. I got one but she sniffed the other one upwards and I had to take her to ED. they managed to get it out without sedation (and I managed to get her to nursery so I could go for my coffee morning!!) glad you got the little one sorted.
