Dear all, we have just build a 5 x 9 metre room for a open plan living kitchen dining room (would like to have an island but not sure will that make it too cramped as keeping the dining table). It's a long room as you enter and at the ends we have the patio sliding doors (5 meter side) Can I please ask for help with layout suggestions as seriously struggling - if you have similar size how have you designed it? pic would hugely help. Many thanks x

People will ask YOU for a diagram!
Include doors out of the room and windows.

Have you got a utility room?

Hi, yes we do have a separate utility.

It’s lovely and big. I think you’ll need the kitchen at the door end so you can have it L shaped rather than all in a run (unless you want to build a peninsula rather than an island). Then it will be easiest to have the dinner table near the middle so you don’t have to walk through the living area to get to it. The thing to watch out for will be ensuring it doesn’t feel like a train carriage with a straight passageway on the LHS, but still having it easy to walk through without disturbing people. We have a round dinner table which breaks up the straightness of a similarly long room and provides an extra surface instead of an island.

Where’s the utility?

I second the above. Kitchen as you walk in, then dining area followed by living area next to the patio doors (for maximum enjoyment of the outdoor space when you're sitting on the sofa relaxing etc).

I think I'd add a peninsula between the kitchen and dining area for two reasons:

  1. practical for serving food and additional work top space (plus keeping attractive but practical items such as fruit baskets for easy access)
  2. breaks up the room and adds interest

I'm currently selling my mums house and it has this layout .. .
It's a Bovis Canterbury design if you want to google

Got this from Google .. it's a similar size , if it were mine I'd have a breakfast bar or peninsular coming out from the end to break it up a bit rather than an island
