Can I leave a job on universal credits

Melonjellies · 20/01/2025 09:58

I'm working 30 hours a week around my children. My work has become so toxic I feel heavily depressed and crying all the time.

Can I hand my notice in and request support to find a mor suitable job with UC?

Also the 7am starts and weekends are not working anymore I need week work.

How would this work?

Thing is I feel every care home and nursing home will be the same. I dont know what other settings I could try but the local hospital etc not looking for anyone.

Have you trued applying for the bank
When I waa a nurse loads of women like you relied solely on bank work to fit around their family commitments.

Op, you can and likely will get sanctioned for around 6 months if you leave a job on your own accord. The fact that a job is damaging you mentally or physically doesn't matter to the DWP. Due to your children's ages, it's unlikely you will recieve any money for a period of time, so I'd advise you to either go off sick until you find another job or only quit, if you can survive without any source of income in the interim. Regardless, they will expect you to apply for any/all sectors, not just care work.

Years ago, I didnt know these rules and by chance, I left my job 6 weeks before my child turned 3, and because i was just under the mandatory criteria to find and stay in paid work when your child is 3+, I was given a small amount of leeway, after a lot of pleading and due to the timing but I got into a lot of trouble for leaving a paid full time job. I then applied for every job available and was back in employment within 8 weeks and I remain there now.

Also just to add, they will ask you what you what efforts you made to try and resolve your issues before leaving the job and/or provide evidence. I.e sick notes, meetings with your manager/HR, etc. IIRC this is because your advisor fills in a form to be assessed by a different department and if the reasons isnt suitable then your sanction and the length will be valid! They won't accept you leaving as the first solution, without exploring all routes to raise your issues and try to get them resolved first.

Go off sick while you job hunt.

onwardsup4 · 20/01/2025 14:19

I think you would be expected to spend 30 hours a week looking for work, they go on how much you earn so if it's below 30 hours at minimum wage they will start expecting you to have job search appointments etc with them regularly.

onwardsup4 · 20/01/2025 14:24

Yes you could get sanctioned if they don't accept your answer for leaving is good enough but it's only the allowance for you that would get sanctioned not housing or children's amounts

PierceMorgansChin · 20/01/2025 14:32

OP not all places are the same. You might find you gel with the people better in a new place.

Melonjellies · 20/01/2025 15:24

Hiya I'd like to work in a hospital environment. Can't be picky though I know. I feel all care homes will be the same
I don't drive. Aghh so much to consider

So If I told them I wanted to come out of work to find something more in school hours it may be considered?

I'm so torn. What do you do. Make yourself miserable or give in?

I wouldn't do that either as firstly you should find the job before leaving and secondly few school jobs gave sufficient hours so you would be expected to seek more work and use available childcare options.

lifebyfaith · 20/01/2025 20:04

Care homes aren't all the same. Why not take a look around a few? See if they're looking for staff and what their flexibility is like?

I think walking out of your job while relying on UC is a very bad idea. You could end up with no job and no money.

Melonjellies · 20/01/2025 22:36

Thank you..I've spoken to the 2 managers today and told them I need their support right now and I'm struggling. Hopefully I will start to feel more myself soon. I will just have to keep going.

I never had a problem with quitting jobs when I was on tax credits.

You can always say it's a childcare/logistics problem.

UC is very much not tax credits.

PP are correct, just leaving the job without any prior discussion with DWP or following the normal route, ie asking for support from managers, speaking to HR about bullying, potentially going off sick if necessary etc... will be seen as OP making herself intentionally unemployed, and sanctioned.

There is little practical support, very little carrot, and rather a lot of stick with DWP/UC - its designed to bully the out of work into whatever job they can be shoe horned into, not to support people in crappy employment and toxic workplaces.

The bank at the hospital is a good option. Alternatively, why not apply to a few agencies that specialise in HCAs in nursing/care homes? That way you could work in a few and get the feel for them, if you like a particular home when a job comes up apply. You can also pick your shifts. Just keep in mind it’s a zero hour contact, with no enhanced sick pay etc but rates of pay are generally slightly higher.

It’s really difficult to find work mon-Fri. Most hospitals currently have a vacancy freeze at the moment so it’s competitive. Shifts are earlys, lates, nights and long days. It won’t be easy to find Monday to Friday work within the nhs unless you looked at clerical roles?

Have you thought about a GP appointment to discuss your mental health? Do you get sick pay and would it be enough?

Personally I’m a big believer in it’s easier to get a job when you’re in a job and it sets a good example to your children. Just my opinion.

Good luck.

I do health care. I have never ever been depressed. This last 5 days I feel like life isn't worth it for me. So I know its getting bad. I feel so sad. 2 fiesty women who work fast have been really off with me. They grt complaints but manager turns a blind eye due to staffing. They've got a couple of people grinded down. I did speak to manager. She won't be able to get rid of the other women so it's really about me getting over it or accepting I can't stay.

I'm struggling with the early starts then coming to the horrible atmosphere is awful

Go see your GP and get signed off, this is a serious impact on your MH, please don’t let it run you further into the ground. Once you have some breathing space you can make a plan of what you want to do going forward, please take that time and don’t rush back after however many weeks they sign you off for at first x

Just keep a close eye on yourself, at some point your mind and body might take over to tell you that you can’t just ‘keep going’ in this environment, if you don’t see improvements in the next week or so please go and see your GP about some time off, I kept going and ended up having a breakdown that took months to get back to work from

I agree with a previous poster - resign and take on bank work. If you want to work in a hospital, apply to their bank, as well as the nursing'care home banks.

Things ARE different - vastly different - between different locations, and being on a bank will allow you to see that and to see if you want to work somewhere permanently.
