To keep removing hearing aids because of itchy ears? Dementia worry!

I need to wear hearing aids; I'm missing a lot of conversation and winding up my partner, not to mention the correlation between bad hearing and dementia. But the wretched things make my inner ears itch and I find myself taking them out a few minutes later. Has anyone else had this problem and did you find anything to help? I've tried olive oil but it only helps a bit. Thanks.

Perseverance, followed by more perseverance.

I do really understand the itchy thing, I get it too. I take hearing aid out, have a bit of a careful scratch (don't want/need an ear infection) and put the aid back in again.

There is an entire thread on here devoted to those of us who are hearing impaired. You may get some better advice there.

Our audiology department have hypoallergenic moulds for hearing aids if necessary. It may help if the itching is caused by an allergy or even just a mild sensitivity.

DH rubs a tiny bit of hydrocortisone cream into the openings of his ears when they start to itch. He says it works instantly. He usually puts it on before bed when he takes his hearing aids out.

Hyrdrocortisone cream will help. Also try La Roche Posay cicaplast balm.

Thanks everyone for your help. Mumsnet is always the go-to place for sensible advice. I will try the hydrocortisone cream and look into hypoallergenic models as well.

Could you kindly post a link to that thread please? I can’t find it. Many thanks.

I'm glad I opened this thread. I have the same problem, so will also try hydrocortisone cream

Afaik there are the standard hearing aids they give you on the nhs, and then some really tiny and comfortable ones you can buy yourself. My MIL has a really good and pricey pair - but it’s the kind of thing which imo is absolutely worth spending on, if you can at all. Quality of life improving for sure.
