Has anyone else noticed as they’ve gotten older

That alcohol affects them differently? I say older (I’m only 30) but throughout my twenties I rarely got hangovers. A few months ago I went out with friends, got drunk then the next morning was being sick. DS had a stomach bug earlier on in the week so I presumed I had caught that. Last night I went out again and spent some of this morning being sick😖 I’m wondering if it’s the alcohol now and I just can’t handle it like I used to!

Yes, a well established thing that we process alcohol differently, and not as well, as we age. My hangovers are much worse

nutbrownhare15 · 19/01/2025 11:25

For me in my 30s I thought it was an alcohol tolerance thing because I binge drunk much less in my 30s compared to my 20s. Now I'm in my 40s I do feel that alcohol affects me even more, it's a noted peri menopause symptom

Plastictrees · 19/01/2025 11:28

Yeah this is a well established fact. I never got hangovers in my 20’s and could drink a lot without getting drunk. I’m sure things would be very different now I’m in my mid 30’s! Day drinking doesn’t appeal at all anymore, if I have a glass at wine at lunch time I’m shattered for the rest of the day 🙈

Scentsitive · 19/01/2025 11:28

Yes. I hardly drink now because it's not worth it and I'd rather have good sleep/clear skin/less risk of disease.

HappiestSleeping · 19/01/2025 11:29

Wait until you get to your 50s 🤦‍♂️

kinkytoes · 19/01/2025 11:31

Other way around for me!

I know how to manage it better now (water in between drinks). Plus I probably don't drink quite as much as I used to on a given night.

I find the same, and I don’t think I’m interspersing with more water — similar amounts affect me less. I’m 52.

Well lesson learnt to start cutting down on how much I drink on nights out!

Yep - 39 here and it’s a nightmare

2 day hangover after a recent 40th birthday

it’s making me really want to cut back long term - too many other things to focus on

Lights1 · 19/01/2025 11:37

I get the most horrid paranoia in the morning too! Again, in my twenties would wake up fine, no worries. But now I get so worried that I’ve done something bad or said something even though I know I haven’t! I think the anxiety is enough to stop me drinking

You’re older now than you used to be- and so’s your liver. Stands to reason it wouldn’t be as good as breaking down alcohol.

BeeKind1 · 19/01/2025 11:44

I’m 41f. Never had an issue with drinking to excess. However I am 140 days sober today after making the decision on September 1st following another terrible hangover that alcohol is no longer serving me. I would recommend stopping alcohol. My anxiety has eased, I find it a lot easier to stay on track with my fitness goals. My relationships with my family are stronger as they are proud of the decision I've made and stick to. I thought Christmas would tempt me to drink. It didn't faze me. The next test will be summer but as it stands I just do not feel the need. Long may it last and good luck with whatever you decide is best for you.

kaos2 · 19/01/2025 11:45

I stopped drinking around 40 because it started to hate me .

Globusmedia · 19/01/2025 11:47

I find my hangovers aren't as bad but they last longer. I think for me hangover is as much about what I drink as how much, so it's don't get as bad as hangover drinking red wine as I used to drinking vodka red bull.

HipToTheHopDontStop · 19/01/2025 11:57

Everyone has noticed that.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 19/01/2025 12:00

There is a reason for this.
Alcohol is a poison. Your bodies ability to deal with the poison and recover impairs as we age, when previously you would barely notice, now you really start to suffer.
I'm 34 and have almost completely stopped drinking because the feeling after simply isn't worth it.

Hangxiety 🙈

Orangesandlemons77 · 19/01/2025 12:17

I have stopped drinking at 48 due to the perimenopause, it started giving me panic attacks and high blood pressure, all of which have improved.
