To ask the difference between renting from the council and renting from a housing association in the same borough?

Just wondering really. Is one better than the other? Are council homes cheaper?

Are repairs better in one? Service charge?

Housing association are often more expensive to rent and you don't always have the right to buy.

POTC · 18/01/2025 20:38

In general the council is sometimes cheaper than HA. Council may have Right To Buy, HA won't. Every Council and HA are different so the differences will not be the same either

fanaticalfairy · 18/01/2025 20:42

HA will have stupid rules to follow sometimes.

With a council home you can make big changes to it, like replacing the bathroom/kitchen, can you do that with housing association?

Yes you can as long as you ask permission and show that a qualified person is going to carry out the work

Okay, i like to do work myself - Ie replacing a kitchen isn't difficult but there's no way I could afford a professional 🥺

Even with a council property this may not be possible. Once a secure tenant you can make changes like a kitchen but you do often need permission from the council beforehand and that permission can be dependent on a professional carrying out the work.

Ahh okay - I wonder if it's done without permission but is done well someone would be fine

Why would you risk your tenancy by chancing it?

When would they ever find out?

patsy999 · 19/01/2025 08:04

Our council do an audit check every so many years. Don't know if this is something that other councils do or not.
They would find out then.

Stichintime · 19/01/2025 08:08

I don't know if your questions are relevant as you don't usually get a choice between council or housing association, you have to accept what's offered.
