Antibiotics making me worse

Hi,
just need some advice please/ anything xx

ive been put on a long course of antibiotics (penicillin V) for tonsillitis. It’s severe and I have like a couple days left it’s 8 a day. I always have recurring tonsillitis & been given all the antibiotics under the sun. I became immune to penicillin but last time it took ages but worked. Anyways I’m 3/4 through the course and I’m worse.
it hurts and feels like a huge lump to swallow, my tonsils are huge and red with MORE pus spots than what I started with! I’m hot to the touch and just wanna sleep all the time. What do I do? The penicillin isn’t working I am actually feeling lots worse! I suffer with asthma too and sometimes feel so short of breath as the tonsils swell so bad

You didn't become immune to penicillin. The bacteria inside you may have been resistant to penicillin. It's got nothing to do with you!

Perhaps phone that NHS no. OP?

Nursemumma92 · 18/01/2025 19:25

I'm not sure the antibiotics are actually making you worse but it sounds like they are not effective and the infection is getting worse.
If you are feeling short of breath with the tonsil swelling then I would contact 111 but if it is acute shortness of breath where you can't catch your breath or speak in full sentences then you need to go to A+E now.

Recurrent tonsillitis is hideous. You should also speak to your GP on Monday and ask for a referral to ENT for a tonsillectomy as it is very debilitating and with asthma as well it must be dreadful. I know the criteria is tight for a tonsillectomy to be carried out but it's worth a discussion at least to see if you can have one.

I would be concerned about quinsy and phone 111.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 18/01/2025 19:31

What @PigInAHouse said. Sorry your feeling so unwell op.

I would be concerned about quinsy and phone 111.

It is difficult for antibiotics to penetrate into abscesses such as quinsy so takes a long time - may need intervention

Bumblefuzz · 18/01/2025 19:47

Definitely 111. I ended up in hospital when I was 19 with sepsis & dehydration(via A&E at 3am as it was before 111 existed). I had gone through 2 courses of antibiotics that hadn't worked & the doctors receptionist clearly knew better & blocked me from further care.

I have had quinsy 3x as an adult, but it was tonsillitis on this occasion.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 18/01/2025 20:00

The antibiotics clearly aren't working - I would call 111 and if you really feel seriously unwell then A&E. Good luck

Postchristmasblah · 18/01/2025 20:02

You either need a different antibiotic or it’s not tonsillitis at all, could be glandular fever. Try and see and ooh GP

ZoeRuby · 18/01/2025 20:06

I was sent to A&E by my GP when I went back 5 days after starting antibiotics for tonsillitis and was getting worse.

It was a quinsy and I was admitted and given IV antibiotics, steroids and painkillers for 2 days which took care of it (olus a 2 week course of a different oral antibiotic when I was discharged).

Worth getting checked out as a quinsy is a medical emergency

Valeriekat · 18/01/2025 20:06

If the antibiotics don't make you feel better within 24 hours the infective bacteria is resistant and you need to see your doctor.

Valeriekat · 18/01/2025 20:06

Sorry I meant to say 48 hours!

Phone nhs24 and tell them what youve told us.

They will decide how best to proceed.

Hope they sort you out and you feel better soon.
