Mattress won't go up the stairs

I need some ideas please, I've had a mattress delivered today that I assumed would come rolled in a box like they all do nowadays. My old mattress has been taken away and this mattress is so heavy we cannot get it up the stairs. The stairs also have a bend in them and it won't bend round so there is no way at all it is going up.

The driver says he can't bring our mattress back and the company website says its on us to ensure it fits so they won't refund. They also aren't answering the phone and I'm just on hold but even of they do I'll be told the same thing.

Does anyone have any ideas on what we can do? We can't fold it in half, it literally won't bend much and it's the heaviest mattress I've ever felt!

Surely they can refund as long as you haven't opened it?

ComtesseDeSpair · 18/01/2025 15:20

Did you buy it in person or online? If you bought online and haven’t opened the packaging or damaged it then you are legally entitled to a refund - although unless it’s faulty you’ll usually be required to pay for it to be collected.

If you try to force it around a bend you likely will damage it, and won’t be able to return it at all.

Whatabouthow · 18/01/2025 15:20

Ratchet straps to force it to bend?

stayathomer · 18/01/2025 15:21

Pivot? (Sorry!)

SweedieLie · 18/01/2025 15:22

You don't have to bend it round the corner.

Stairs which double back usually have full height ceilings to the upper floor. You slide it up length ways first, then stand it upright to shuffle around the bend, then back flat for the rest.

It will go. You just need more muscle by the sounds of it. Stick a post on Facebook asking if any friends have a strong teenager 17 or 18 who wants to earn thirty quid for ten minutes work.

TeenToTwenties · 18/01/2025 15:24

Open the door half way up the stairs and let one end go in there to get round the bend. (One for Dirk Gently fans).

Hoist it in through a first floor window?

Bankholidayhelp · 18/01/2025 15:26

When we had a similar problem we used bungee cords and ratchet straps to get it as small as possible and also give somewhere to grip.

It was a tussle.

Pippa12 · 18/01/2025 15:27

It sounds like it’s too heavy, ask for more help?

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 18/01/2025 15:27

Not much immediate help but we thought we might have this issue so bought two single mattresses which zip together so if you have to replace this could be an option.

Ohdearjustmethenagain · 18/01/2025 15:27

Pivot!

Sorry I see I'm not the first PP to say this but couldn't resist.

SweedieLie · 18/01/2025 15:28

Open the door half way up the stairs

Who has a door half way up their stairs?! I can't even imagine what that would look like!

ThinWomansBrain · 18/01/2025 15:28

recall my sister buying a new bed in a small terraced house where the stairs bent around themselves.
Argument got a bit heated with her and then partner, so I went out and left them to it, but essentially he took some of the stairs out in the bit where the stairs bent.

Pivot? (Sorry!)

This was going through my mind too

Lindy2 · 18/01/2025 15:32

Sorry I could only think of PIVOT too.

Being slightly more helpful can it go straight up? ie tie ropes around it and lift it (with help) straight vertically upwards and on to the landing? It obviously depends on your stair layouts but potentially an option.

MattressHell · 18/01/2025 15:33

We are going to try ratchet straps. I'll report back

@stayathomer this mattress is cut in half. I would like to exchange it for one that is not cut in half.

CowBuoy · 18/01/2025 15:39

Will it fit in through the bedroom window (or another bedroom window on the same floor)?

I'm a reasonable man. I will accept store credit.

MattressHell · 18/01/2025 16:16

We did it! Ratchet straps worked so thanks for all the suggestions. What a nightmare that was! Done my back in getting it up the stairs so hope it's comfortable to sleep on 😂

Well done

Mimilamore · 18/01/2025 17:52

I did the same, superking sized mattress and definable not bendy! We enlisted the help of some muscley neighbours and they liked the challenge I think, did it long ways and backed up the passage to back bedroom.
I've said it will have to stay in the house when we eventually move.
Another problem is turning it, 180% is just about doable but flipping it..... nah!!!

It is from a Douglas Adams book.
An electronic monk creates a door to go through system when something is being carried up the stairs which enables something to get into a position that's impossible when the monk removes the door.
Or something.
I forget.
I did say it was a Dirk Gently reference.

LividNewYear · 18/01/2025 18:29

I tried to buy a Premier Inn mattress last year.

It ended up back on the van. They said they weren't allowed to bend it round corners. FFS I live in an Edwardian terrace with an attic.

It absolutely would have got up, as well, if they'd have tried.
