How brutal are you with chucking things out?

I feel like my head is going to explode

I have 6 year old twins. The amount of stuff we have is just ridiculous. I want to have a massive sort out or clothes & toys, I’ve got toys they no longer play with piled up in the garage and bags and bags of clothes that no longer fit. I keep it because I think I’ll sell it at the next NCT sale or put it on Facebook/vinted but honestly I just do not have the time.

I’m borrowing a small van from work next week and I’ll be loading up all of the toys and visiting various nurseries/playgroups to drop off the toys (I have contacted them all previously)

I’m then going to drop off all the bags of clothes at the charity/clothes banks

i find the idea of this kind of liberating but I’m also terrified that I “should” try and sell it.

does anyone else sell stuff and if so how do you find the time? I work 3 days a week and we have full on weekends with the kids activities. On the days I don’t work it’s filled with housework and taking my elderly dad to hospital appointments.

I suppose my AIBU to ask permission from mumsnet to just get rid of it all and give zero fucks 😂😂

ps the money would be lovely if I did sell stuff but my experience with Facebook/vinted just sucks all joy out of me

Can anybody tell me the best/ easiest online company that collects from your house and definitely donates it to charity.

Our charity shops just don’t seem to take anything( no idea how they survive).

If you make £200 a month selling your family's old clothes I can't imagine how much you actually spend buying clothes?

Most of our stuff is from charity shops to begin with or vinted.

Jabtastic · 19/01/2025 16:48

I'm giving myself permission to get rid of a lot at the minute on the understanding that I won't buy lots of rubbish to replace it. Selling stuff is much harder work when you just need stuff gone.

I’m brutal and always have been. I have a small box containing a few precious memories. Other than that if it’s not used or worn it’s gone. Mainly given to charity shops with the occasional Vinted item.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/01/2025 18:41

Op do you drive? My local tip has a postbox style collection box for clothing, you'll often find them in supermarkets car parks too. They don't want rags it still has to be reasonably wearable, but it's amazing as you can just bag it all up and post it in the box!
It's worth splitting up your decluttering into like categories. Alot of charity shops won't take plug in electrical items, so I put them to one side for the charity shops that do, lots of shops point blank refuse toys so I tend to keep toys all in one bag, i also try and do little and often so it's less overwhelming for both me and the shop staff.

LaPalmaLlama · 19/01/2025 19:01

Best advice on here was "Accept that you're not actually going to Ebay it and just take it to the charity shop" 😂

ffsgloria · 19/01/2025 19:09

I occasionally sell something on Vinted but only if I know it'll go for decent money. Otherwise I am ruthless and give everything to charity. I've spent the last couple of years decluttering 10+ years worth of stuff & never want to go back to owning that much again! I am a minimalist at heart & cope with life better when there is less stuff to look after. Brutal is the way forward. It's only stuff.

Esdale · 20/01/2025 10:28

I'm pretty brutal. For the last couple of years, unwanted birthday and Christmas presents have gone straight into the charity shop bag. I don't feel guilty.

I rarely sell anything because I can't be bothered with having stuff lying around waiting and then having to post it or organising for some random to come round to collect; I just want it out the house ASAP. Having clutter lying around makes me feel stressed. Getting rid of clutter makes me feel very calm.

With the bikes, I try to sell them if you want to, but if they don't go within a month or so, then just leave them out the front with a note saying "take me, I'm free". They'll probably be gone by the end of the day. Yes they were £140 each, but you've spent that money all ready and used them. Now you just want rid.

mumonthehill · 20/01/2025 10:34

I sorted through all our coats last week, all we had grown out of. Had a huge pile to sell on vinted and then actually thought I am never going to do it so bagged it all up and took it to the charity shop. I felt so much better!

Frostythesnowman1 · 22/01/2025 10:40

Half way through the big clearout! 2nd lot of toys to be dropped off at a nursery. The one I picked is a registered charity so every penny they make goes back into the children and facilities. Makes me feel even better 😀

once these have been dropped off time to move onto the bags of clothes xx
