A (disabled) parking one!

I parked outside a terraced house on a side street where the sign below is in the window. I did not see this at the time. No disabled bay marked.

Parking is very tricky in the area, I am currently caring for my sick mum who has just come out of hospital and she lives on a busy main road that also has limited parking. I try to park on the main road whenever possible, generally on the block before where there is often space, but not today.

AIBU to report to the Council the fact that someone (assume disabled parking notice house) is using a sign without permission and saw fit to scrawl an abusive message about parking on my drivers side window with a tippex-like substance this morning?!

YABU - Don't report. Why did you park there? Park three streets away and walk you lazy mare.
YANBU - No restrictions marked on the road? Game on. Report them for inappropriate signage and vandalism!

Report to police and council. They are misrepresenting themselves. If they are genuinely disabled they would have disability parking reserved.

That isn't true. Many areas charge for such bays and people still ignore them.

Whether they are misrepresenting themselves or not, the sign in not illegal.

I assume that you have video footage of the person or people who wrote on your car. Because without it you can report it to whoever the hell you like - there is no evidence and they can just deny it (if it was them).

Even if the council paint a disabled bay on the road outside your house anyone else with a blue badge can park there.
I have a disability & we opted not to have a bay, as we do have a driveway, & it would mean our visitors couldn't park there. But potentially anyone with a blue badge can park in a disabled bay.
There's one outside a house near my gp, I've never seen another car in it, but I only use it as a last resource if I can't get parked anywhere near the doctor.
The sign where you parked doesn't look binding, & if they have damaged your car I'd complain.
However, if the parking around there is so difficult bear in mind the disabled person may have found it very hard to have to park far away from their home.

If you have a drive that meets your needs I think the council would reject your application anyway.

Had very similar in our village. Resident bought sign and put it up as his wife was disabled. Would regularly shout and rage at people who did not comply with it. I would normally have sympathy BUT he had to buy the sign as the council would not give them a marked bay. They werent entitled to it because they had offstreet parking available and chose not to use it AND he wanted to keep 2 spaces free at all times. One for his wife's car that she could no longer drive and it was rarely moved and a second for his car.

Also, how do you know it's not a council approved sign? My LA gave me something very similar because they couldn't put a bay outside my last house. I was told to display it in my window.

But I dont think that is legally binding? I lived on a terraced street, one of my neighbours had this, but it was also marked in white paint on the road?

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/02/2025 16:02

No, its not legally binding (don't think anyone has suggested it is), but it is what councils suggest in some situations - a polite notice asking that people avoid parking there. They do generally suggest the notice is big enough for people to see and placed where it is visible, however theres no way of ensuring people use common sense or logic!

There will always be people who take being told 'try a sign asking people nicely not to park there' by the council as carte blanche to be fucking obnoxious and vandalise peoples cars, thats just how the world is. Certain people act like that anyway!

I would report them, like you say anyone can buy these signs, they are not official, around here people can get a disabled parking bay marked outside of their house by the council. I would not adhere to any sign like that (and my Mum has a blue badge I know how annoying it can be when people park in disabled bays).

I would go to the police about the vandalism, being disabled, or being frustrated with what you view as Inconsiderate parking, does not give you the right to vandalise other people’s property.

It's not always easy to get one outside your home my mum and separately my sister were both disabled and both refused parking bays outside their houses the reason being they had front gardens but as the houses were both rented neither could get landlords ( one being the council) permission for knocking walls down.

AgnesX · 12/02/2025 17:19

I understand why they've done it if they have mobility issues but technically they've no right to.

I really wouldn't do anything about it as the council will be less than interested. A traffic warden on the make more so.

Most of the ones around here are just painted on the street outside of people’s homes, no need for knocking anything down.
