4 year old bumped head, would you go back to urgent care

Looking for reassurance... My 4 year old tripped today and hit the brick wall on the side of our house this afternoon 😭 went to urgent care and they said it looks okay and to keep an eye on it and cold compress as much as possible. She's totally fine in herself but the size of the bump is massive. It's got a lot bigger since we got home. Guess I just need reassurance this is normal and it'll go down soon from people who've been through similar 😩 would you be going back as the bump is growing in size?

A bump out in much better than a bump in if you see what I mean. As long as okay in self and not being sick? Then all good

cryinglaughing · 17/01/2025 20:03

I wouldn't go back if I had already been seen in urgent care.

DelilahA · 17/01/2025 20:04

Ouch! Poor kid. Did they explain what “keeping an eye on it means”?

I would probably keep dc up as long as possible tonight; and then try to do shifts in dc’s bedroom and stay awake through the night, or make sure sleeping fine and no fits.

Anonym00se · 17/01/2025 20:09

My DD had a lump like this, it kept getting bigger until her whole forehead was massively swollen and she looked like a Klingon. Just to echo pp above, hospital told me that it’s a good sign that the swelling is on the outside. They also said that it is usually bumps to the back of the head that cause the most damage. I hope it heals quickly and she’s feeling better very soon.

Zapx · 17/01/2025 20:12

I don’t think I’d go back unless there were other signs, dizzy, drowsy, being sick etc. I would probably sleep in the same room tonight though

BarbaraHoward · 17/01/2025 20:12

My eldest has had a couple that were almost as impressive. We didn't get her seen because apart from a sore head she was fine - no dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness etc.

The NHS has a good page on what to look out for with a head injury.

BarbaraHoward · 17/01/2025 20:14

Here you go.

Impr90 · 17/01/2025 20:15

Oh ouch! No I wouldn’t go back unless there were any other causes for concern as others have said.

This a good resource

Hope it settles soon

They should have given more explicit instructions about what to look out for. Our paeds A&E has all the leaflets! Look at the guidance as per PP. Essentially if they seem ok, eating/drinking, not drowsy, not nauseous, they are probably ok!

Agree with this. I’ve had concussion myself a few times and spent a night in A&E with DS next to a child who’d bumped her head and started fitting hours later. Just keep an eye and be alert to any changes. Don’t hesitate to go back if you’re worried. Don’t bother with 111.

NuffSaidSam · 17/01/2025 20:17

Ouch!

A bump on it's own isn't a reason to go back to urgent care. Make sure you are familiar with the signs of concussion and keep an eye for those. Any of those signs and straight to the hospital.

stargirl1701 · 17/01/2025 20:19

In bed with you tonight. Set alarms every 2 hours and rouse DC. Any sickness, confusion, etc. then return.

Whataretalkingabout · 17/01/2025 20:25

Put ice on that bump( with a cloth between) and take her back to a&e.
You will never regret having gone twice, but if it turns out to be serious and you just ignored it??

Gloriia · 17/01/2025 20:31

Disagreeing with everyone else but I would go back, that is a large swelling which I'd want looking at.

Mumsnet is a funny place, we have people advocating a&e for the most minor of complaints yet a significant swelling on a 4yr old after a head injury doesn't warrant urgent treatment centre review. She'll probably be fine but I'd get her looked at.

LIZS · 17/01/2025 20:35

I bumped mine earlier this week. Blush Fine at first with light grazing then large bump and bruising came out over a couple of days, but bump now almost gone. Without any other symptoms she will be fine.

Solotrek · 17/01/2025 20:50

I agree with this. You’ve kept an eye and it’s getting bigger… I wouldn’t want to go into nighttime like this personally.
Also it’s the initial injury cause….. hitting a brick wall seems significant to me

DressingGownBaddi · 17/01/2025 21:03

I can’t find the picture, but my daughters was like that. She face planted the floor, roughly the same age if not younger! It was purple and HUGE.

a lump on the outside is always better then the inside

cadburyegg · 17/01/2025 21:06

No I wouldn't go back if she is fine in herself

BoudiccasBangles · 18/01/2025 18:04

How is she today, OP?

Notgivenuphope · 18/01/2025 18:10

Ouch poor lass
agree with above. Rest, plenty of ice cream/treats/hugs

NiftyKoala · 18/01/2025 18:33

If she becomes disoriented or vomit go back immediately. Poor baby that looks painful. It's so hard when our babies hurt. Wishing you Noth feel better soon because I'm sure you are a wreck. 💐

SMLSML · 19/01/2025 16:40

Thank you all so much, all so kind, especially to check in! She's a lot better thank goodness. I didn't sleep all night and kept an eye on her and kept waking her every two hours to make sure she was alright. She's back to her normal self and the swelling has almost gone, she's just got a very impressive graze now so hopefully it'll go down quickly! Thank you all so much again x
