School run fun - so ludicrous I just had to laugh

DS's primary school is at the end of a lane which has pavement on only one side, and a narrow one at that. There's one stretch just before you get to the school where the pavement gets even narrower and there's only really room for single file traffic. There is an unspoken rule that those who have already dropped off their kids hang back to allow an approaching group of school-bound people to clear this stretch before forging ahead themselves. It's chaotic at the best of times, with all the kids, pushchairs, scooters and bikes barrelling along. Picture the scene, and then imagine a schoolchild riding in a bright green electric toy car down that stretch of pavement, repeatedly ballsing up the steering, bumping into the adjacent wall and causing a massive bottle neck behind him. Meanwhile, mum is slapping along behind him in flip flops, cackling and videoing the whole thing.

The same kid has now acquired a remote controlled toy car (a small one, not a ride-in one) and was allowed to drive that to school the other morning, with similar results.

I get that some kids hate the school run and the parent is probably trying to make it more appealing but this is just ludicrous, surely, or AIBU?

YABU - If it gets them to school, what's the harm? Let the kids have their fun!

YANBU - Remote controlled cars, ride-in or otherwise, don't belong on the school run.

Personally, I'd prefer he was on your school run rather than doing the weekly shop at the same time as me on Saturday. Surely there can't be 2 such entitled Mums about? It has to be the same family on the school run, and driving round the supermarket each sat...

Delphiniumandlupins · 17/01/2025 21:02

Och, kids never fit in those electric cars for long. He'll just about learn to steer the car and then be too big for it by half-term.

Insanity! What are the parents thinking?!

If it was a one-off, just forget it. Though if his mum is driving the child there, in flip-flops, that is a potential danger compared with wearing shoes or even driving barefoot.

ClearHoldBuild · 17/01/2025 21:12

I’d suggest that all of those trying to get as near the school as possible should park a couple of streets away and walk the last bit especially if there are children on scooters and the child of your nemesis being in the road.

LegoBingo · 17/01/2025 20:16

It's her toes

OK, I get it. Commenting on flip-flops gets to you. I am therefore happy to tell you that nobody minds if you walk around in flip-flops in the winter we might think you are weird but it's your toes and all as long as you don't take up the whole pavement with a child in an electric scooter during school run.

TroysMammy · 17/01/2025 21:21

Is it my imagination? There seems to be rather lot of posters on different threads who are having their presumably nasty comments deleted and they have only started commenting on MN in the last few weeks? Is it the same person name changing or are there more nasty sods joining up recently?

Flip flops in January? WTF

Flip flops in January? WTF

Happens all the time in Wigan, along with no coat and shorts.

viques · 17/01/2025 22:04

Flipflops? In January!

Dotto · 17/01/2025 22:09

That remote controlled car will get kicked into the road under the wheels of a car if he's not careful.

Oops.

VoodooRajin · 17/01/2025 22:11

If they made the road traffic free at drop off and pick up, that would solve the lack of space for pedestrians

Meanwhile, mum is slapping along behind him in flip flops, cackling why do you give a fuck what footwear she's wearing and "cackling"? Really ? She's not allowed to laugh now?

Are you jealous she's loving life?

I voted YABU for this very reason.

OP showing an ugly mean streak.

Yep, ugly and mean, that's me. Seriously though, never imagined this phrase would prove so controversial. I rather liked it. Thought it added some anecdotal colour after a tedious description of the pavement layout. I'd better just stick to dry facts in future 😉

You can't wear flip flops with socks? Are they slides or, heaven forbid, sandals?

It is possible that it was flip flops AND socks, which is a favoured combo amongst mums at the school.

@LegoBingo The main reason I mentioned the flip flops is that they made it hard for her to keep up with her son in his motorised vehicle, adding to the overall ludicrousness of the scene. And the cackling laughter just seemed really juvenile and inconsiderate when others were being held up on their way to school.

Laughing because she's having fun. Nothing wrong with that. Just because everyone else is struggling doesn't mean she has to be silent and miserable.

Loving life? On the school run?

Said no one ever.

Lambington · 17/01/2025 23:14

The flip flops would annoy me too.

Come on now…You know this is not the behaviour of someone ‘loving life’. She’s loving the power she feels knowing she’s holding everyone up and pissing everyone off. People like this are cunts.

BeMellowOchreZebra · 17/01/2025 23:31

@AlwaysAnExcuseForEverything You could video her videoing him?

Or why not just out-do them yourself? What about dressing up as a cowgirl ans riding a hobby horse on the school run?

Even better... one of those inflatable dinosaur outfits!

The batshit crazy laughing mum in flipflops is ofcourse allowed to laugh (and wear flip-flops) but she's doing it WHILE BLOCKING EVERYONE ELSE with her kid in scooter etc DURING SCHOOL RUN. Now, this would make anyone quite annoyed because it's entitled I don't give a fuck about anyone else behaviour. So her laughing while blocking everyone is pretty TONEDEAF and shitty behaviour in general.

Moveoverdarlin · 17/01/2025 19:58

Was she really wearing flip-flops? In January? That’s the biggest crime here. Last week it was minus 4 some mornings.

There's a girl of about 17 who does the school run in leggings and a midriff bearing top all year round! I am in awe of her imperviousness to the cold.

MalleusMaleficarumm · 18/01/2025 07:08

lol af least she’s wearing outside shoes with the flip flops. We have some who walk to school in their slippers along with their pjs and dressing gowns!
