Friend being odd about plans

Sian9099 · 17/01/2025 15:54

I’d agreed a few weeks ago to support a friend with an event tonight that she was going to go to alone but wanted company at. She asked me, and I thought it would be fun and wanted to see her, so I agreed to go too and had made plans for a babysitter to come over. She just text me saying that the event has been cancelled, and so she’s ‘happy to leave it and give me back the evening if I want’.
Aibu to feel a bit used and like she only wanted to see me so she had company at this event? It’s annoyed me a bit.

I read it that she is happy to still go out and see you, but she appreciates that you having to pay for a babysitter is an imposition on you and she is giving you an out if you don't still want to, given that there isn't a specific event to go to anymore. I think you being annoyed at this message is a big overreaction.

Hm ok thanks I can see it that way too.

Well you agreed to go to an event with her and the event is cancelled so she's saying you can have your evening back but if you want to see her anyway why don't you suggest doing something else?

PickledElectricity · 17/01/2025 16:13

Can you post her full text? The bit you've highlighted is ambiguous.

NeedToChangeName · 17/01/2025 16:16

"I've got a babysitter. Shall we go out anyway?" Sorted

TortillaTam · 17/01/2025 16:16

If I was in your shoes, I would just reply asking if she still wanted to get together and do something else? I really wouldn't read that much into it!

JimHalpertsWife · 17/01/2025 16:17

She likely thinks she's asking a lot of you to give up and evening / sort sitter just to support her. I would.

Message her back "no way!! I'm baby free, let's go have a glass of wine and some food together instead x"

Sian9099 · 17/01/2025 16:17

The text said ‘I don't think x event is happening so happy to leave it and give you back the evening if you want’

I agree - reply with "I've got a babysitter anyway, fancy a bite to eat/drink, it would be good to catch up"

Sian9099 · 17/01/2025 16:19

I think I'm reading into it more as I'm always the one to make the effort and confirm plans so i’m taking her message as if she's not bothered about seeing me.

Honestly I don't think she means it that way.

Pottedpalm · 17/01/2025 16:27

Why don’t you ask her? You know, speak to her, rather than asking a load of randomers what she means.

ItGhoul · 17/01/2025 16:27

I think you're being over-sensitive here. She invited you to an event. The event is no longer happening so she's offering you the time back.

minipie · 17/01/2025 16:29

I agree with PP she’s giving you the option

If she wasn’t fussed about seeing you without the event, she’d have written “event has been cancelled so let’s leave it”. Rather than “happy to leave it if you want”.

LolaJ87 · 17/01/2025 16:29

It does seem a bit like you're over-analysing it and expecting the worst. If you still want to go out then just say so to your friend!

JimHalpertsWife · 17/01/2025 16:49

Have you messaged her back?

Eldermillenialyogi · 17/01/2025 16:59

You're being hard work to be honest OP
