Cat walking off lead

I've got two dogs, and a cat. So our dogs are used to cats, but one is an airedale terrier, that does like to chase squirrels but really loves the cat (they were raised together from babies).

So while I was walking my dogs in the field, we encountered a family walking their cat, off lead and without any way to safely contain it.

My dog got excited and went after it like she would have with a squirrel (it's a field after all with plenty of dog walkers and squirrels).

The family got annoyed with me as the cat was very distressed (poor kitty!)

It was a very bizarre encounter but I think they should.at least have had a plan B beyond cuddles to contain their kitty cat.

Your animal attacked their animal. Your fault. The cat had as much right to be unleashed as your dog. Their cat went to them while you were the one who couldn't recall their dog. Ideally, of course, both would have been leashed though most cats are very resistant except maybe some exotic breeds.

Your dog should have been on a lead if you can't control it. Not the cat? What in the world 😂

I've never had an issue with my dog!

-Someone was walking their animal off a lead! And my dog chased it!
-Was your dog on a lead?
-No, my dog is speshul. It only chases after squirrels and cats (more animals TBC). Am I being unreasonable (I know I'm right).

Typical AIBU thread. The whole bingo.
👌🏼

Poor girl. That must have been terrifying for you and her.
Glad she's ok {apart from limp}.

Thanks @oakleaffy it was! it was unnerving to be shouting, hitting the dog with a spare lead and trying to push it off and find it was so clamped on her it did not pay any attention. Even when my neighbour hit it with a broom. In the end, I had to straddle it, hook my hands under the collar and twist to make it let go. Poor old cat, she tried to run off and I thought it had broken her pelvis, she could not walk. Her whole torso was purple bruises and punctures, and she got really infected. So, all in all, a limp is not a bad outcome.

Pic or it didn't happen 🤣
Honestly though, I can't imagine how you walk a cat off lead as they give zero fucks and never do as they're asked?!

You walk and they walk in front, alongside or behind... or all 3... with various rest stops while they climb a tree, investigate a bush or decide they just want to sit for a bit.

They tend to do exactly the same on a lead as well. Which is a bit annoying when they get it caught on things, but not quite as tricky as walking a ferret.

Mainly they just want to be with their human and see what you are up to, so don't tend to go more than a few feet away.

And correct, zero fucks are given as usual so you just have to hope they are being cooperative.

If your dog can't be trusted around other animals, it's the one that should be on a lead. Obviously.

What an odd thing to say!

I've never in my life seen anyone walk a cat, with or without lead. They walk alone! Is this in England?

I think this is a joke thread to be honest. Cats may follow their owners if they go for a walk but they don't get taken out on leads.

Why is it an odd thing to say? You don't put cats or squirrels or voles or foxes on leads.

You do put dogs on leads if there is any chance they will bother other people or animals.

Except that some are.

Some do. Primarily indoor cats which aren't used to the wild world outside can enjoy relatively safe walk on the lead to meet new smells.

Anyway, it doesn't matter whether the cat was on lead in this case - the cat jumped to it's human's arms. The issue is the dog
