I owed around £200 when I moved out of my old property for the council tax, tried to contact to set an arrangement. However, they contacted my new work for it to be deducted, I have only been there 4 months. I'm so embarrassed and can they sack me for this?

No they can't, I work in HR and we get these all the time. We just process them through payroll and think not much of it

Thank you. Can I ask how much is deducted? Is it usually the full amount or is there a set amount they deduct each month or does it just depend please

Why would they sack you for this? It has zero impact on your performance. Unless you work in financial services where, I suppose, it could limit your options.

Thanks, I’m not sure, just feel like a criminal for not paying it but it was genuine financial difficulty at the time and I’ve only just got back on my feet and into new work as a single parent

You must have ignored the council tax team for them to do this. Embarrassing but they won’t sack you.

It depends on your net earnings but for around £200 I'd expect it all to be taken in one go (unless you earn quite a low amount)

As previous poster has said, it depends on your net earnings and they normally want any debt cleared by the end of the council tax 'year' (Normally January if you normally pay over 10 months) Basically they have made their own arrangement with an attachment to earnings. Embarrassing, yes (as the council tax recovery would have been contacting you about this for some time) sackable? No.
