How much is too much?

I am going away a work trip in a few weeks time… for a week! Just wondering how much is too much to claim expenses in terms of food and drink. If I’m in the airport and I get a glass of wine and lunch, then I can claim, but if I just get a glass of wine? Do I still claim the expense? I know I could ask this in work, but I don’t want to come across this absolutely stupid on this.🤣🤣 there’s a good view of us going so there will be several glasses of wine involved. 🤣 opinions please…go easy

It depends on your expense policy, I wouldn't be able to claim for just wine or a soft drink. There would have to be food involved

Oooh ok I’ll have to look into that…it’s probably the same

Ask your company what their expenses policy is, they will undoubtedly have one.

imnottoofussed · 16/01/2025 18:37

Entirely depends on the company policy.

I wouldn't expect you to be able to expense adhoc drinks and wine. It's usually a meal with a drink. With a set amount quoted for that eg £50 for evening meal.

MaybeItWasMe · 16/01/2025 18:40

Expenses policies are usually very clear with max amounts for each meal. Alternatively, some companies give a flat rate per diem. I was once away on secondment for 3 weeks and was given a per diem of £66 per day. That was nice, particularly as all meals were included at the hotel!

Redcandlescandal · 16/01/2025 18:41

My employer policy doesn’t allow us to claim for any alcohol.

PheasantPluckers · 16/01/2025 18:42

No-one bats an eyelid at a glass of wine at the airport at my company, so you really do need to check the policy as it can differ massively!

PigInAHouse · 16/01/2025 18:44

I’m allowed to claim for alcohol without food being involved, it entirely depends on your policy.

Positivenancy · 16/01/2025 18:46

Ok I will definitely check the policy tomorrow 🤣 we are going somewhere notoriously expensive. The hotel we picked for the four nights is 1k each but that includes breakfast

You need to ask your employer about their specific expense policy. How can anyone here tell you?

It was more of a general wondering to be fair…

Goes on a work trip away and asks Mumsnet what is a reasonable amount to spend?

That is what your workplace policies are for.

I get that you might be excited OP, and I hope you have a great work trip, but come on, it will be clearly outlined in your expenditure policy.

JandamiHash · 17/01/2025 01:36

Check your work policy.

When I go away I can claim for a one course meal for each breakfast lunch and dinner, with one drink per meal, butnot alcohol. I think there’s a budget too bits it’s pretty generous

bridgetreilly · 17/01/2025 01:43

I’m allowed to claim for tea/coffee/soft drinks outside mealtimes, as well as meals, but not alcohol. Definitely check.

Ponoka7 · 17/01/2025 01:52

As said, check the policy. My DH used to get a daily spending allowance and my DD gets a set price for each meal and then an allowance for drinks, but are expected to add to it. Don't take your lead from others, especially if there are back stabbers in the group. A lot of people claim the allowance even if they don't use it. My DD's work only asks for the main meal receipts. But watch your back.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 17/01/2025 03:49

You do need to check your company policy, I'm not allowed to claim alcohol and the amount for 24 hours to cover all meals is about £24 , I work in the public sector. I used to work private sector and fifteen years ago it was up to £75 a day allowance and alcohol fine to claim. No one here is going to be able to tell you what's allowed by your company.

Positivenancy · 17/01/2025 21:50

So I checked the policy, there is no set limit on price for a meal, a meal can include 1 alcoholic drink, no limit on non alcoholic drinks. Thanks everyone
