Child’s reading age

How reliable are these reading tests.

My dc is 6.5, reading age came out at 9.3, how normal is this?

Dc has had to miss a fair amount of time off school this year, so i’m surprised and relieved if it’s a reliable test.

Yes they're pretty reliable if administered correctly.

In my daughters prep school class this was very common. Most were at least two years ahead of their actual age.

They are reliable as standardised tests and this shows your DC is above average at reading for their age. Measuring age in reading months is not always considered the best metric though as the results are hard to interpret. I don't know how the results would translate exactly as I don't know which test was used, but it could be that your DC is in the top 15% of readers for their age.

Hard to say. We use then where I teach for measuring progress but they don't reflect actual age expectations - really low ability readers coming out at roughly their chronological age for example.

Just be pleased your child is doing well, and don't overthink it.
