To wonder what could Starmer do, to turn things around?

B0xes · 16/01/2025 08:35

He was elected on fewer votes than Corbyn with very lukewarm support, the Tories lost that election, Labour did not sweep in on a tide of public approval, they just benefitted from peoples anger at the Conservatives. Since then, Starmers approval rating has tanked. He seems to have gone from one ill judged move to the next and seems totally tone deaf in speeches. Can he turn it around? What would he need to do?

A migration tax. Charge immigrants 50k to come here. So that's 500,000 times 50k or 25 billion a year. They can pay it back over 25 years.

1dayatatime · 16/01/2025 13:46

@midgetastic

"Speed up net zero investment - it's a growth area and it will significantly reduce future costs "

The problem with that is that it will simply increase the cost of electricity to businesses and the remaining industries causing them to go bankrupt (and be replaced by imports eg steel, aluminium etc) or offshore to a country with cheaper energy.

All you achieve is further de industrialisation with industry shifting to much higher CO2 per capita emitters such as China. So all you do is trash the global environment and the economy.

OK in theory but I don't think that you can find 500,000 people each year willing to pay £50k to come to the UK.

Build closer working ties with the EU

Stop the mission of saving the NHS its broken, work on replacing the system with a good insurance system like in France or Germany. Free at the point of service is not worth holding onto if the service is poor like our health service is.

Change stance of sticking to making tough decisions and not being open to negotiating. As with pensioners fuel allowance and changers to farm inheritance tax. it is not going to win over any voters

Stop allowing so many overseas investors buying properties particularly in the cities and then being able to sale at huge profits with little tax paid. Often these properties are left empty. Its absolutely criminal. Only allow citizens to buy more than one property in the UK.

Higher taxes for landlords (I am a landlord) and second homes

Gas, electric and water companies to have to prioritise investment and charges inline with inflation before payments made out to shareholders. There should be a low percentage cap on money paid to shareholders

Watch your back, someone is likely to challenge you for leadership if your popularity does not improve my guess will be on Angela Rayner or Wes Streeting (message to Starmer himself)

maxplanck · 16/01/2025 13:52

@Motomum23 done a survey have we ?
Why not have a new GE and get Nige in to solve the mess the Tories left 😂

Thelittleweasel · 16/01/2025 13:54

@B0xes

He needs to be in the house of commons every day that it is sitting. As do all his ministers. He's gone off to Ukraine I believe.

Tittat50 · 16/01/2025 14:07

@Viviennemary I think if you dig you'll go find other grifters taking up more of your hard earned cash. Vis a Vis the RFamily for a start.

I'm no economist but if there was a way to implore larger companies to pay reasonable wages, I feel a fair amount of issues could be addressed. I don't know how easy that is to do and why they don't do it. I understand for small businesses this would not be so feasible to do.

I couldn't quantify numbers who feel this way, but there's a growing sense of anger at the situation with immigration ( no one really knows what's going on,I don't), but there's a bit of information out there to make people ask questions. He needs to jump on that. People are angry and if I was living in a coastal town, I believe I would feel angry. This two tier policing issue he needs to jump on. I believe this absolutely is happening.

Whoever talked about targeting Amazon for tax contributions. I don't understand economics well enough but to me going after the large organisations like this seems sensible to me.

The education system is a bit messy right now, particular SEN provision. I wonder how many of us affected here make up the vote. Possibly not enough for any change here to improve opinion of him. But there are thousands desperate for someone to improve this situation ( not necessarily the cause of Labour of course).

Same with socials care and the state of our NHS. Not their cause but doing something to show they acknowledge it.

Have they stepped away from the trans ideology push as yet? They need to because people are losing their mind over this now I'm quite sure.

The Tories were despicable imo and Reform frighten me. They'll suck people in with their pledge to address immigrants and allocate spending to the NHS and social care is my fear.

midgetastic · 16/01/2025 14:07

Do all MPs have to turn up? Inckudinf reform MPs? How often should an ordinary MP show up and help his local constituents?

At what level of international criticality would you say it's ok to get on with the work of being a prime minister rather than sit in an outdated room where people hurl insults and try to score verbal points rather than get on with the work?

There is work to be done

Things are actually better ( economy stronger , inflation slower) than people thought - the made up on MN economic crisis from last weekend is still being held at bay

Motomum23 · 16/01/2025 13:42

He could resign. No one in this country wants this government - those who did vote Labour didn't expect this shitshow.

Labour with their current majority is not going to commit electoral suicide with an election.

Cattenberg · 16/01/2025 14:11

1dayatatime · 16/01/2025 13:34

@Cattenberg

"And what about in 20 years’ time, when we have millions more retirees , and thanks to the current low birth rate, not nearly enough young workers to replace them?"

Well in 20 years time the retirement age will simply be higher and most likely will be financially worse off. But it will pass in one generation.

But if you import large numbers of workers today to pay for the current number of pensioners then in 40 years time you need to import even more workers to pay for the higher number of pensioners and so on in some kind of Ponzi scheme of an ever growing population that places an impossible strain on infrastructure, health care, education, the economy and the environment.

As for the replacement of workers, as I said there are 9 million economically inactive in the UK today.

”Economically inactive” covers various scenarios, including sickness, early retirement, studying, and having caring responsibilities. You can see the breakdown here.

A young woman

Who are the millions of Britons not working, and why? - BBC News

About a quarter of the working age population - those aged 16 to 64 - do not currently have a job.

midgetastic · 16/01/2025 14:11

Well I did vote labour and k don't think it's a shit show - so don't put words into other peoples mouths thank you

I am actually glad that they are getting on with the work rather than getting stuck in silly short term responses to the latest online winge

Right wing wingers who got us in this mess in the first place stropping like a toddler when it can't be fixed NOW

I don't think that the bond market turmoil and highest interest rates since 2008 has been made up on MN:

Fluffyholeysocks · 16/01/2025 14:13

@midgetastic what do you mean by 'normal' MPs? And why are Reform MPs any different? They were elected by their constituents who they represent in Parliament. Just like any other Party except Sinn Fein.

midgetastic · 16/01/2025 14:15

Normal MPs represent their constituents
They turn up in parliament , they turn up at their consisituancy office .. the day to day work of being an MP

1dayatatime · 16/01/2025 14:16

@Cattenberg

Believe me for the right salary a large number of those off sick, in early retirement or studying will very quickly come back to the job market

Part of the problem with the high number in long term sickness is that it pays a higher benefit than unemployment does.

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 08:57

He hasn’t pissed off this WASPI pensioner. Musk and Farage are disrupters who will be a thorn in the side of any PM. Five months in polls are meaningless - look at what happened to the Tories’ poll ratings in five years.

He hasn't pissed off this WASPI pensioner either. The media has had it in for him from day 1 though.

midgetastic · 16/01/2025 14:18

So inflation is lower than expected and the economy grew

these are facts

People might want more and faster but they should learn a dash of realism

Nothatgingerpirate · 16/01/2025 14:19

Resign, the bastard.

SherbetSweeties · 16/01/2025 14:19

Sack that awful Angela rayner and Rachel' reeves and then resign

How many Reform MPs, candidates or party members have criminal records ?

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 16/01/2025 14:22

Discuss the truth of how Brexit has made us poorer and rejoin the single market. Pass a law where the top paid person in a company can't make more than a certain multiple of the lowest paid person's wages.
