New manager.

A colleague at work has just had a promotion to manager from assistant manager and has since been quite arrogant and I have heard her bitching about staff, has been quite insensitive to one whose grandparent is very unwell in hospital, has asked me why I don’t work a certain day as I only do 4 days, even though this was agreed with the previous manager and most people in my work do 3 or 4 days and I even heard new manager say to someone that they need a day off and it’s fine that they worn 4 days but for some reason it seems they think I should be doing 5. I feel like the new manager is trying to guilt trip me into taking on an extra day or come in on my day off to cover. Which I do sometimes but I have an appointment for blood tests tomorrow and I’m not feeling the best. I’m worried about my role now as she seems to have changed personality now she has become manager. Aibu to feel worried about how this will effect us at work

You have a right to feel worried, but you also have a right not to work 5 days when you have a 4 day contract. Remember, she will come to need you to make her look good at some point. Management is a two way street. Try not to worry and focus on the now rather than what ifs

For a start I'd stop going in on your day off to cover.

Don't let anyone guilt trip you. You know your hours, just work them and go home. Your the one they think they can guilt trip, don't fall for it!

HoraceCope · 20/01/2025 08:08

do you have a contract?
keep your head down

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/01/2025 08:25

Be as nice as pie, all smiley. But FIRM.

Requests to “cover” etc. That’s a shame X is unwell. I’m not available I’m afraid, my days are xyz and I have commitments / don’t have cover on other days. I’m sure you will find someone.

It’s really easy. Just say no, that doesn’t work for me.

The End.

She's got new manageritis. It's usually self limiting when they calm the fuck down and stop trying to prove themselves.
Just stay calm and keep doing what you are paid for. And no, five days is not that so you won't be doing it.

Push back gently. Rather than “It was agreed with the previous manager” say, “I am employed to work a four day week - like a lot of other people here. Are you asking them as well?”

midgetastic · 20/01/2025 10:17

If convienent you could reply along the lines of "would you prefer me to come in on Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays"

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/01/2025 11:39

Sorting this out is why they are paying her the big bucks. One of the joys of mgmt is sometimes you have to suck it up and do it yourself.
