Stone fell out of partners engagement ring after 8 months..

Hi

My partner was gutted today when she realised she had lost the stone from her engagement ring. Rang Samuels who said bring it in and it will be sent off to an assessor to decide if Samuels are liable or not. Either way, fitting a new stone will take 6-7 weeks on top of that which we are gutted about as the wedding is 4 weeks tomorrow. We'd prefer for them to replace it.

I've attached a couple of photos , I don't know if anyone can tell how the stone would have been held in place and if anything was broken

Thank you !

I am awfully hard on rings and can not wear rings with a claw setting.

From the photo it looks like the claws have lifted. I wonder was her ring catching in clothing and gloves and the claws lifted. It happened to me.

I am by no means an expert, but shouldnt the prong things be turned inward at the top, and that should secure the stone? Only thinking that from looking at my own ring.

I don’t know much about jewellery but the claw doesn’t look very secure to be holding a stone

NippyChippy14 · 15/01/2025 19:40

It doesn’t look like any of the claws that hold the stone are broken, but it looks a lot older than 8 months.

Could you try contacting customer support for them to see if they could do anything to bring it forward given the circumstances?
The stone fell out of my ring a few years ago and I haven't had it replaced just yet but I bought a cheap day to day ring from Warren James because it felt strange without having one on and its lovely to be honest, very similar to my original and lots of people have commented on it and are shocked it's a cheapie. Granted I was married then so wasn't worried about the ring in wedding photos.

You won't get quality jewellery from Samuel's I'm afraid. I'd ask for a refund. If they insist on a credit note, use it to buy something else and get her a new engagement ring or a quality second hand one.

Thank you very much for the replies, that's very helpful.

She doesn't recall catching It on anything at all, just noticed it was gone

Samuels customer service just said go back to purchasing store. In hindsight, I shouldn't have bought from them, I was just swayed because it was exactly the style she wanted.

Is it covered by house insurance?

Mouthfulofquiz · 15/01/2025 20:14

If you can possibly afford it, consider visiting a vintage jeweller. You will probably find something you both like more for less money. I recently bought a platinum 0.4 carat diamond ring for £350. Lovely clear and bright diamond and a good weight at around 4g of platinum. Worth considering.

Take it in store, be courteous with the staff and I think you will get a positive result. In all likelihood they will need to get it sent off premises for assessment, if it comes back the issue is due to a defect, they will replace the stone, if it’s accidental damage that caused it, how much they are willing to help and the price you pay will likely depend on how you have approached them with the complaint and treated their staff. In these situations, courtesy and manners will take you a long way.

In hope it goes well, never fun when these things happen, but they do 😊
