well went to john lewis saturday morning and after umming and ahhing at me said they'd give me a refund.
i originally paid £100 cash £75 on credit card. got round to the trasaction and they said put your pin in and i noticed it said £175 to go on card-i said i paid £100 in cash and the woman said "well yes but this is easier and i don't have £100 in my till"
have come away because i was in a rush and thought hang on this can't be right becaus enow the £100 given to me from grandparents to but a new buggy is now and credit card so will ahev to pay interest on an item by rights i should/could have paid for in cash!?
surely a refund has to be by original method of payment? can they really do this??
to get my daughter a new buggy i now have to put it on my credit card!
grrr!

scottishmummy · 05/05/2008 14:24

Blimey!the cash transaction eg £100 should have came to you yes and the £75 CC back to card.but tbh dont know what you do now.try go back to JL i dont know how easy it is to remove the £100 form the cc and do a cash swap.hopefully someone in retail will be able to help

But surely your credit card will now be in credit by £175, so, if you do buy another buggy with your card, you are no worse off.

LIZS · 05/05/2008 14:26

You could have insisted on the cash but it is too late now I suspect. Don't understand your logic re: the inerest though since it is actually paying more off your card balance than you previously owed so interest is less.

escape · 05/05/2008 14:31

if you buy the buggy and pay the bill on time you'll be no worse off

lydiathetattooedlady · 05/05/2008 14:31

i have stuff on my card so wont be in credit. it will be reduced by 175 but when i buy a new buggy it will put it back on, i can't afford to pay credit card off in one go.
my logic was
cash=new buggy no interest
will now have to put it on card
which means i will be paying interest on item untill i pay off whole of bill which will be no time soon unfortunately!
is there mthod in my madness??

no not really ! Chances are if you had the £100 it would just get frittered away before you could find another buggy . As it is in the meantime your interest is less.It really is swings and roundabouts.

scottishmummy · 05/05/2008 14:39

lydia you are not out of pocket on the deal tho. goggle the voucher site se if you can get some money of at JL

lydiathetattooedlady · 05/05/2008 16:28

i know iam being unreasonable! i suppose i was thinking i paid cash i should get cash back dammit! so how long does it take for moneynto go back on your card cos i so can't afford to buy a buggy til it clears!

A lot of people don't realise that if you try to get a refund in the morning there is usually no cash to give back so it has to go on a card of some description. In practically all shops there is only around £75 float money in the morning as the rest is banked daily. Not to mention that most transactions are done by card now. So I think YABU.

littlepinkpixie · 05/05/2008 17:01

You are no worse off because of this - you now have £100 more on your card than you would have done, so spending that money will not leave you any worse off, and while it is in your account then it is reducing the interest you would have to pay.

madmuggle · 05/05/2008 18:04

A refund should be given by the method originally paid, unless no receipt at which point a gift voucher/credit note is usually given. I would personally have smiled sweetly at the sales assistant and told her I'd be willing to wait while she got her manager to sort out my cash for me

Mucha · 05/05/2008 18:20

Thing is though, you can't give a cash refund if there is no cash. It just does not occur to people who have never worked in a shop before that if you go for a refund in the morning as opposed to the afternoon there is little chance that there will be enough cash to make the refund. When I worked in retail this happened countless times and there is NOTHING you can do. The only other option apart from putting it on a card is to tell the customer to come back later when it is more likely that some cash has gone into the till through sales.

lydiathetattooedlady · 05/05/2008 18:25

i have worked in a shop i was a floor manager for a well known fashion outlet and if there was not enough money in the til we would have got the person in admin to get enough from the store safe.

Umming and ahhing...did they give you the refund as a favour then ? Or was there an actual problem with the item ?

lydiathetattooedlady · 05/05/2008 18:45

yes i had s silver cross dazzle-the first one the footrest came off after a few days, the replacement i got on wednesday the back wheels fell off thurs! JL said they had had a lot of problems with these but theyt wanted me to take another one which as two had brooken i didn't want to!

scottishmummy · 05/05/2008 19:15

i had similar problem with bugaboo 2 faulty frames each time frame could not open fully.JL refunded in full

backfire · 05/05/2008 19:44

Sounds very poor quality then ! I'd have wanted my money back in whatever way was best for me; however unless your cc is already subject to an interest payment on what's owed, surely you won't be out of pocket ?

madmuggle · 05/05/2008 19:47

I used to work in retail, and the manager/floor manager always has the means to get the cash. Even if the till float is only £50 there's bound to be enough in the cash office to cover a refund so small
