Fever?

Marvelfan300 · 15/01/2025 05:44

My toddler has caught a virus my mum had a couple of days ago, fever of 38.5, lethargic, refusing food and fluids but attempts them in small amounts still having wet nappies but experiencing body aches.

I can’t control the temp? I’m giving calpol every 4 hourly although he really doesn’t want it as it makes him gag alot, fever started Monday evening is this a normal amount of time for a fever to be lasting? I’m day two no sleep and could just burst into tears I’m so worried😭

If you are concerned contact your GP or 111. It’s good they are taking fluids. I was advised with my daughter who suffers febrile seizures you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time or alternate the two. Give one dose then two hours later the other medication and so on. Hope little one feels better soon.

Have you tried nurofen too?

Zanatdy · 15/01/2025 06:37

If you are worried ask the GP to see him today. If he’s not taking the calpol properly (my DD was the same with medication) then that could be why the fever isn’t reducing. GP will recommend nurofen too. In my experience it’s fairly normal for young DC to have a fever for a few days when unwell and the fact they are drinking / urinating is good. But if you want some reassurance / your child checked over by the GP give them a call.

I find that instead of spending time seeking reassurance from forums and internet articles, in reality the only comfort and reassurance I can get is via a medical professional.

Have a GP check them over if you are worried - you'll never regret seeking advice even if it's just for reassurance.

Thanks for the some what passive aggressive comments - he was taken to the GP three hours after this post as it was written almost sleep deprivation and worry.

GP stated it was virus and it would run its course, paracetamol regular as I was doing, offering food and fluids as I was doing.

hes refusing all fluids but you’ll be pleased to know I’m syringing him every 5-10minutes which he’s tolerating and didn’t need to see a forums advice for that!

thanks

Glad you are getting liquids into him. Do you think he would suck on an ice lolly? Or some cold cut up grapes. Mine would sometimes chew on a cold wet flannel, especially if they had a sore throat.

hope he is feeling better soon

youngoldthing · 17/01/2025 04:30

Alternate calpol and nurofen and give him as many ice lollies as he needs.

it will run its course but it’s frightening to see them so unwell.

Ibuprofen often works well for a fever with my kids.

Safxxx · 17/01/2025 05:03

Hiya hope you're little one is feeling better 🙏

Guavafish1 · 17/01/2025 05:06

I’d take him to A&e … they can test to see if he is dehydrated
