Why are people such twats when it comes to parking???

Arghhh!!!! Just a moan!!!

I'll start off by saying I know this woman has every right to park here and "technically" she's doing nothing wrong, but why can't she (or people) just be more considerate of others as well???

I've just bought my first house and moved in a couple of weeks ago. It's a semi with a driveway. Unfortunately the drive is in awful condition, I can't even get my car on it due to extreme potholes etc. I'm in the process of having it fixed (work already started) but there's been a delay due to the snow/icy weather last weekend. It should hopefully be finished in the next couple of weeks. I only have the 1 car btw.

My next door neighbours (not attached) have 2 vehicles and choose to park on the road even though they have a perfectly good drive that they could use. The man parks his van on the road blocking their drive and the woman parks her car on the curb outside my house. The issue is that she parks in the middle of the curb so that I can't get on either side, between the 2 of them blocking my drive or behind her because I'd end up blocking next doors drive (the house I'm attached to) so I have to park down the road instead.

I've noticed on a few occasions she's parked behind me and when I've gone out she's then moved her car back to the middle so I can't get on. What I don't understand is that I've already met them, spoken to them and they seemed really nice but she's clearly trying to make a point for some bizarre reason??? All I can think is that the house was empty for 2 years before I moved in so clearly their use to parking wherever they want. I even spoke to her the other day as I left the house and pointed out that I was having the driveway fixed and she said "oh yes sorry I've only been parking there because of the icy weather as I didn't want to get stuck on the drive". It hasn't been icy for 3 days and she's still doing it and has done the same thing tonight (pulled her car forward after I've gone out so I've had to park down the road again)

I had enough (having to carry shopping bags down the street tonight) so went and knocked on to politely ask her to pull forward so I could get on but they ignored the door. Is there any need for people to be like this???

The neighbour is being a complete pain, but can't you just park really really close to her car and let the rest of your car hang over the dropped curb to your drive?

icecreamheaven · 15/01/2025 00:11

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn I've already tried this and I can't squeeze inbetween them, I nearly hit his van when I triedSad our driveways run alongside eachother and he parks his van across the entrance of their drive. She's in the middle of the curb but the curb isn't that big so there really isn't enough space for me to get in front or behind her. It's a massive pain.

She isn't hogging a short curb at all, maybe she's hogging a short kerb though.
Do you know anyone who has a big vehicle they don't use, an old Land Rover is useful, to park outside your house, or even outside their house! They may get the message.

Calm down. It's voice typing.

Selfish pricks! My neighbour always parks hanging over my driveway despite having his own driveway that he doesn’t use. It’s difficult to pull out when he’s there.
Do you know their routine when the car and van will and won’t be there?
When the space is free put your car there and leave it for days (unless you know anyone willing to leave their car instead if you use it daily).
Make it awkward for them to park so they get the hint. Sometimes being passive aggressive is the only way with people like this.

Why don’t you ask her to move? If she refuses put a nail in front of her two front tyres I think she will then get the message not to park there

icecreamheaven · 15/01/2025 10:02

@Elissaisnotmyname I did pop over last night to ask politely if she could pull forward so I could get on behind her but nobody answered the door. The thing is I'm not actually bothered if she parks in front of my house (it's not my land after all) it's just so frustrating that she leaves no room for me to get on behind her so I end up having to park down the road instead. It takes the piss when there's enough room for 2 cars on the curb but she takes up the entire space instead. I know they don't have to use their driveway either but I don't understand why they park both cars on the road and happily let other people struggle to find spaces (I'll be parking on mine once it's fixed to leave more on street parking for others). Bizarre and just really inconsiderate and selfish imo.

She's gone out so I've just moved my car and plonked it in the middle of the curb so she won't be able to get on behind me now when she comes back. Call me petty but why should I be considerate of her when she's been an absolute arse for no reason with me?

Perfectly calm deary, it's a word that's often used incorrectly!

SinnerBoy · 15/01/2025 10:14

I sympathise and she's a selfish that

But the constant mis-spelling of kerb is doing my head in!

I'd be tempted to keep parking there when you can even when your drive is fixed.

RunningJo · 15/01/2025 10:28

I hate inconsiderate parkers. I just don't get people who have a drive and don't use it, especially the people who don't want their own large van blocking their window / drive so park outside someone else's house. I don't get behaviour like this and get irrationally annoyed .😂

Every time you get home ask her to move her car forward so you can park there as you have heavy bags to bring in & don't want to have to park down the road. Make a point of saying how if she moves forward, then there is room for you both. Surely she will get fed up of moving. I would say that hopefully you won't have to ask for too long as your drive will be completed, then ask them innocently when the work starts on their drive. When she says they aren't having work done, reply with "oh, my mistake, I assumed you were parking on the road as you were waiting for work to start on your drive".

So Is there any reason you can't park outside of their house?, is there no space?

I was going to suggest exactly this! If she's going to make it impossible for you, you make it impossible for her. If she dares to come knock tell her to use her drive and don't move it.

MathsMum3 · 15/01/2025 10:44

Looking at your diagram, I think perhaps it's not worth making a big deal of it right now. In a few weeks your drive will be fixed and you can park there. At that point it will be better for you if she parks in the middle of that kerb section, so that you have more space to get on and off your drive between her car and the van. If you upset her now, she might start parking right up to your dropped kerb, and then it might be tricky/unsafe to get on and off your drive between the two vehicles. I'd bide my time and avoid making it a bone of contention between you now. If she starts parking right up to your dropped kerb after your drive is completed, you'll know she's just trying to be difficult.

Mikiamo · 15/01/2025 10:46

Kerb. It's kerb. Curb means to stop.

icecreamheaven · 15/01/2025 10:52

@Mikiamo ok thanks for adding absolutely nothing to the thread other than to critique my spelling. Cheers!

Honestly just be grateful that you have a driveway so that soon it won't be an issue!
I wouldn't even bother mentioning it to them.
People are so bizarre about how they park around their house and it also drives me nuts that they park in the middle of the curb when you can usually fit two cars along each stretch.
But we had a long running issue with our elderly neighbours who after they got rid of their car suddenly took issue with me parking in exactly the same spot as before (behind where they would have parked on the kerb between our houses).

They sadly have every right to park there but they're being inconsiderate pricks. I had a neighbour doing this a few years ago and I'll admit I did once borrow one of the pickups from work and drag their car about six feet out of the way to make space for me to park - put a chain around the axle. I did it in the middle of the night and denied all knowledge lol. They had no idea it was me as I parked the pickup in the next road and the Golf GTI I had at the time defo wouldn't have been able to tow their 4x4. 😂

I would LOVE to be able to do this. I'll add it to my list of dream vehicles, which includes an old banger for - oops - smashing into drivers who cheekily push their way out of side streets, forcing people (me) to suddenly brake. Also a tank for driving straight over cars blocking my driveway. Aw, sorry mate, didn't expect anyone to be parked there while I was manoeuvring my lovingly restored ex army vehicle onto my drive. There's a helicopter too. I could go on ...😂
