Do some Children actually enjoy homework?

Personally, I didn't enjoy it. I'd rather have been out with friends or doing anything but homework, but that was 20-odd years ago and a different era. My daughter (Year 6) loves it, to the extent that she will do it as soon as she walks in. Is it a phase? Will it wear off as she goes to secondary school next year? Is there any hope that she may actually do homework without a battle and begging to go out with friends, or am I being lulled into a false sense of security?

Hmm! I loved it at primary school, but got into hobbies at secondary school and stopped wanting to do it! Used to get into a lot of trouble as a result - good luck!

DS loves the "challenge" maths that comes home occasionally. But everything else gets done to a minimum standard.

DD is Yr 8 and whilst I don't think she loves it, she takes herself off to do it every night after tea. She says she finds it useful as revision for what they cover in lessons (she's gets 2 x subjects of 30 mins per night). Each piece is marked + written feedback within 3 days though so that helps motivate her as she gets feedback about what she's done + well and where she can improve. Without that feedback I'm not sure she would be as motivated.

I loved maths. For my A level in 1981 I did every past paper over the last 11 years. I was driven to work hard from my first exam in 1974 at high school when I got 96% in french. It felt good.

My year 6 ten year old bloody loves it. They only get one sheet a week from school - she asked her teacher for a sheet a night.

She did the 11+ last sept and spend the previous two years spending every night studying the practice books.

She has even been teaching herself two languages in her spare time.

He older brother was nothing like her and did all he could to get out of doing it.

Some children just love academics.

Lobstercrisps · 14/01/2025 11:55

I always did my homework at secondary school on Friday night, I really enjoyed the challenge!

stillljh · 14/01/2025 12:00

I loved most of it. I hated history and RE and hated the homework for it too.
I loved working at my desk where it was quiet.
It just depends on what the child is like really. Some children are more academic than others and love to do the extra work but for some children who find things more difficult or find it hard to concentrate or whose talents lie elsewhere (sport, music, art, etc.) it can be torture.

Dontcallmescarface · 14/01/2025 12:02

DD loved it and would always do it as soon as she was home.

biscuitsandbooks · 14/01/2025 12:02

I did in primary school when it was set tasks and set expectations.

Really, really hated it in secondary when it was a lot more open-ended.

@Mydogisamassivetwat

This sounds exactly like my daughter. We have not done the 11+ but if in shops that have revision books, she will ask for them. My son is only 4, but I can already tell he will be less inclined to sit with a book! I just hope she continues to enjoy learning!

@biscuitsandbooks

Yes this is what I'm hoping will not happen, but it probably will

I was definitely the latter of the two; the thought of having to stay in education beyond 18, all those years ago, filled me with dread. Although I would have gone to university for the parties!

I really hope she stays like this when she goes to secondary school. She knows, from visiting the grammar schools that there is a lot of homework and she’s so up for it.

Fingers crossed, because honestly, all the way through secondary and sixth form it was like pulling teeth with my son. I’m too old for 6 more years of that shit now!

Sounds like we could have been friends 😂

It sounds like she will settle and enjoy it. I do sometimes wonder if I should have done the 11+; the secondaries are good by us, but I hope they push her. When we viewed the schools, DD was more interested in the library and books available than anything else!

My DD doesn't like it but she always does it with no need for me to nag her or anything, because she wants to do well in school. Even though she hates school (or so she claims).

When I was in primary school I loved doing school work so begged my teacher for homework, then didn't want to do it 😂

madamweb · 14/01/2025 12:37

Mine both happily get on with it without being asked. And choose to do extra tuition /classes outside school too. They also do plenty of sport

I think they just enjoy learning and developing
