Do funded hours still get taken into consideration even within a school?

DS is 2 years and currently receiving 15 funded hours. He would have received 30 hours come September however I recently had to leave my job so he’ll carry on receiving 15.

My eldest child will start reception in September and I wondered how things would work if I moved DS to the nursery at DD’s new school. It may sound like a silly question but I genuinely have no clue how it works in a school. If DS was to join, would he do a full school day (9-3) everyday Mon - Fri? Or do they still used funded hours so he’d only do 15 hours there?

You can send your child to any nursery you want - private or school based. Every nursery will apply the funded hours differently, some will charge top up fees.

If you sent them to a school nursery 9-3 every day and you get 15 funded hours you would have to pay for the remaining hours or you could just send 3 days a week to use just 15hrs

15hrs is also term time only, if you want it all year it's around 11hrs a week

You would select the hours (in line with what the school nursery can offer) and then claim the hours just as you do now.

At our school, children eligible for 15 hours can either attend for their funded hours only (so either attending mornings or afternoons) or parents can pay for extra sessions to have the child attend for a full day.

This BUT some nursery schools around us only accept children with 30 funded hours full time.

Those on 15h can only do some sessions. They don't charge top up so run fully on the council funding (I believe they are council run pre-school so that might be why).

Ours is 30 hours 9-3 Monday to Friday and you can pay for early drop off, or you can do 15 hours either Monday morning to Wednesday lunchtime or Wednesday lunchtime to Friday afternoon and can pay for additional half/full days. It should be on the school‘s website.

As far as I know there is no mechanism for paying for extra hours in a State Maintained school nursery and most don't offer full time hours. A private nursery attached to a school will be different.

Ahhh I see. So it’s basically the same at a nursery within a school. You either have 15 or 30 funded hours. It’s only from reception when they’ll be there every single day, 9-3 or whatever the school time is? That makes sense, thank you. DS will just stay where he is then!

Yes. Unless you paid for extra hours and they could do them, but that would be a lot of time for him, and they might not think it was sensible for him to be there that much!

There are some nursery schools that offer full time but they are rare now. I was the teacher in one 30 odd years ago.

Back when mine did this the school nursery offered 5 morning OR 5 afternoons, without any ability to buy any extra sessions. That said, it was way back and I think only 15 hours funding was available to anyone.

Our school nursery is term time 5 days pw, 9-11.30 or 12.30-3pm. To have the all day care there is Wrap Around care in a different classroom and the 30hr childcare offer covers it. This means you get 12.5 hours nursery and 17.5 hours wrap around
