To not be worried

So at baby group today with my 18month old she got super grizzly and clingy the group was really busy......

At the end another mother who I've seen an handful of times at this and another group said have you thought your daughter might have autism?

I looked at her like WTF and said oh I'm sure she's just overwhelmed as it busy and she's realised Daddy's not here- she looked me dead in the eye and said she does that a lot- like I've seen you a few times but Ok you do you but she's just like my elder two who have autism...... We go to same group another day which is much quieter (also seen this mother there too) and little one has been fine!!

I shrugged and went to leave and she said just think about it!

Am AIBU to ignore this or should I be worried?

To put into context she's 18months not currently in nursery or anything just been looked after by us as by chance we've both been off for 6months sabbatical type breaks! She can get overwhelmed in busy groups but I didn't think it was a cause for concern!

I wouldn't be worried OP, maybe worried about the mum/doctor/autism specialist thrusting unwanted advice your way, sounds like you handled it very kindly I don't think I would be so calm if someone shared their thoughts on the behaviour of my children

Yanbu she's 18 months old. People are unique and different not everyone needs diagnosing or certainly not at this point

StrawberryWater · 13/01/2025 18:40

I wouldn't worry. Far too many armchair diagnosticians around nowadays.

Some times kids just hate busy environments and at 18 months well show me a tot that age who isn't easily distracted and cranky!

Ah the joyous world of unsolicited parenting advice.
Try not to worry, your dd is only a year and a half. It wouldn't be unusual for a tot to get overwhelmed in a busy loud environment esp if home is calm and quiet

sprigatito · 13/01/2025 18:42

I'd be staggered at her arrogance! Who walks up to a stranger and diagnoses their baby?! What a weirdo.

Thank you everyone sometimes I worry we're too laid back as it's our first and we weren't really bothered the the competitiveness of our NCT group around development!

@Alwaystired2023 I might have reacted differently if I'd not just applied for a job in the centre where it's held 🤣
