So I was at a busy hospital waiting area today very crowded nearly every seat taken about 60 people. Woman opposite me and dd was watching something on her phone very loud. I would have loved to watch a movie or something on my phone but forgot my headphones and it wouldn't occur to me to just play it with the sound. Is this a thing now am I out of touch or aibu

YANBU it's v annoying. I guess hospital/kid is slightly different to my experience though.
I had an absolute bellend playing his tiktok videos on full blast on his phone in a packed train carriage. I asked him politely. Ignored me. Asked him again. He told me to shut up.
So I began reciting the book I was reading out loud. VERY loud. Only did about a paragraph before he sucked his teeth and turned it down.

No regrets.

Knob.

Yep. It's a thing now. On an Easyjet flight recently (Usually have no problems with EJ) there must have been about 5 people within a few rows of mine watching or playing something noisy on a device with no headphones. I had my own headphones so wasn't too bothered but I wondered if there is a volume at which the cabin crew step in. Tempted to take the laptop next time, really crank it up and see what happens. Seems wild that you essentially have to pack ear defenders if you don't want to hear that crap.

In fact, I'm going to check EJ t&c now......

Crumpleton · 13/01/2025 17:14

This often comes up on MN.

Is there even a cut off age, if so who sets it?

It seems fine to have a tablet/phone/other device blaring out peppa pig, or whatever choice, to keep youngsters entertained whenever the fancy takes in a restaurant or on a train so maybe they've grown up doing so and see nothing wrong in it.

Personally have never had my phone on loudspeaker while out and don't particularly like listening to others choice of noise coming from theirs either, but consideration is inbred much more nowadays.

MimiGC · 13/01/2025 17:15

It seems to becoming more common now, in many public places, including hospital wards - where people are ill, trapped in bed, with only a curtain between them. Totally ignorant and unacceptable behaviour.

Electricsea · 13/01/2025 17:18

Surely it depends. If it was a&e waiting perhaps they rushed there without thinking of headphones etc. if I’d have done that with one of my young kids and ended up sat there for ages I may well have let them have my phone if they were unwell to stop them kicking off or getting really upset, or as a distraction if they were in pain.

CatMum27 · 13/01/2025 17:18

It’s all about me, me, me now. People don’t respect shared spaces as long as they can do what they want.

I commute so come up against this problem regularly. I’ve taken to leaning in and/or commenting on what they are watching (adults, not children). Apparently that’s quite distracting but my argument is that if I have to hear it I might as well watch it. Usually makes them turn it off.

ShowAndGo · 13/01/2025 17:18

Dom Joly's 'I'M ON THE BUS!!!!!!!' is the new normal. The phone's got smaller but, incredibly, the volume has increased.

spanieleyes22 · 13/01/2025 17:18

Yes I tend to agree @MimiGC . How has it become acceptable. Even for children it's not right they should be allowed "pollute"'the air with cartoons. Watch without sound or with headphones ?

Happens in our staff room a LOT. Drives me absolutely mad. I've started asking people with a big smile whether they would mind putting their earbuds in. Generally gets a positive response but it's a workplace so they're fairly unlikely to knife me 😂 Not sure I'd try it on a member of the general public!

KittenPause · 13/01/2025 17:19

Obviously it's annoying but I suppose needs must in certain situations

I always carry a pair in me so I'm generally ok

spanieleyes22 · 13/01/2025 17:20

Just to say the woman doing this today had no children with her she was on her own and pleasing herself. It wasn't an and e just a hospital waiting room.

Huh? How is watching videos "needs must" 🤣all the other adults were waiting patiently occupying themselves without bothering anyone else.

So many people do this now. Adults, kids, teenagers. It’s incredibly rude, annoying and bad manners. They seem completely impervious to the glares and tuts they get on the bus as well. Can’t take the hint. It’s such an annoying thing. People do it on my bus every morning and it makes me furious.

Well no, it's not a case of "needs must". When does anyone need to listen to shite on their phone at full volume? You either put in headphones or do without.

No children involved today @Electricsea just a woman on her own pleasing herself . Around 50 years of age

Oh sorry I’d misread and thought you meant the woman was with her DD. Yes not acceptable for bored adults to be doing that.

People just don't give a fuck who they might be annoying nowadays. I wouldn't dream of watching something on my phone without headphones,or failing that,on silent but with subtitles. I think too many people have an overblown sense of entitlement these days, they just do whatever they want and sod the consequences. Equally annoying are people having loud conversations on public transport with the person they have called on loud speaker! No,I do not want to listen to what you got up to last night FFS.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 13/01/2025 17:30

Even my nearly 4 year old knows there’s no sound allowed on the train or bus. I commute with her so i do cave and allow the phone or tablet on some horrible mornings sitting in traffic - she will happily watch it on silent or play a game no sound !

she does question why people have it on loud and says they shouldn’t be doing it !

Ilovemyshed · 13/01/2025 17:38

Its rude and totally unacceptable. Unfortunately there is absolutely zero respect, even in quiet train coaches.

RanchRat · 13/01/2025 17:41

A young woman was doing this on the train - horrible shrieking American show. I would have said something but she looked like she might punch me in the gob.

Nelliemellie · 13/01/2025 17:48

Spoilt entitled people, no respect for others. I regularly come across this on buses, loud conversations over FaceTime, I feel like smacking them with my bag It’s very intrusive.

ElangaScores · 13/01/2025 17:49

It’s so incredibly rude. Can you imagine if all the adults in a flight listened to their podcasts/audiobooks without headphones? But children seem to get a free pass.
<I’m still bitter about a flight I took last week with two little darlings in the row in front of me had iPads with NO FUCKING EARPHONES>

That said I went to pick up a sandwich for lunch today. Whilst I was waiting for it to be prepared, a bloke in his 30s was sat eating his lunch in the shop watching a movie on full blast.

I was on a 2hr EJ flight in November. A teenage girl in the row in front started watching something on a device with the sound turned up. Her mum (I assume) told her to turn it down, girl ignored her. A male cabin crew member came along and said "Turn the sound down please" in a very firm voice and she did!
