AIBU to be worried about identity theft?

Hi ladies
Please reassure me.
I was good friends with a work colleague.
Unfortunately we fell out...big style. Since the work environment became toxic, I no longer work there and blocked her number.
HOWEVER, since we were good friends, naturally we knew each others DOB, full names and addresses ( like most people would know regarding friends or family)
My question is, can she use these details alone to steal my identity? Do I need to worry about this?

I guess it's possible, but as you say, we all know this information about others. Usually other info such as place of birth, mother's maiden name etc. is required. As well as copies of passports or driving licences and bank details.

Generally speaking, the more info that is out there (i.e. people wishing you happy birthday on Facebook seems nice on the face of it, but now lots of people you don't know personally can have a guess at your date of birth. If you are into ancestry and you share your findings - there is your mother's maiden name) the more likely it is to happen. But if you are a curmudgeon like myself and rarely share any info, then it's less likely, but never say never.

Why do you think she would? It's a huge leap to go from "not being friends" to "pretend to be me"!

Have you got reason to believe that this person is involved in crime?

It's a very strange leap from falling out with a friend to them stealing your identity.

Well, she doesnt have any other info aside from full name, dob, address.
Birthdays are usually shared in my previous workplace, only because it is a common courtesy to contribute towards a gift and wish them happy birthday.
She hasnt been involved in any crime but she really has shown me that you never really know someone or how far they can go

Huh? So do you worry when you give your details to any company or organisation that they might use them for nefarious purposes?!

Well no.
How is this related to my toxic ex colleague?

Because identity theft can come from anyone and anywhere that has your personal details, not necessarily someone you actually know. And you still haven't answered pps question as to why you automatically think your ex colleague would do that.

Babyandmexox · 12/01/2025 20:47

Really not sure why this would even cross your mind to be honest. Stop worrying about something that hasn't happened and is likely not to.

Hoppinggreen · 12/01/2025 20:49

Why would you think this?
Really bizarre
Either you have good reason to think this person would do this OR you are behaving in a bit of a paranoid way
