Ripped off by garage?

I checked my car's tyres (particularly because of the weather) and found one really needed changing. I booked it in, dropped it off (felt mildly annoyed as the staff looked directly over my head and addressed my DH who was with me...) and wandered off round the shops while we waited.

I got a phone call telling me I needed all new tyres. I assumed I must not have checked properly (even though I was sure the one I'd worried about was definitely worst) and agreed, thinking if my judgements were all out, it was much more unsafe than I'd realised, and feeling a bit embarrassed.

Went back and paid (somehow more than 4 times what 1 should have cost, but again just grateful it was sorted.) I said an email receipt was fine.

When I checked, I'd also been emailed a report of the tyres. It said the one I'd picked out was worn under 2mm and needed repair. 2 others were no less than 4mm, and the other no less than 3mm. Their own attached guidance said these should be advisory for monitoring, not urgent for immediate repair.

AIBU that these would have lasted me many more miles, or were they right?

If in doubt, thank them for the advice and go elsewhere.

I know I should have asked the specifics, but the whole manner made me doubt myself more than them, as they spoke to me like I didn't know enough to be responsible and they were doing me a favour managing to fit it a much bigger job than I booked.

Was it Kwik Fit? My local franchise was awful for this kind of thing.

Learn to say no OP. And ask around for a tyre place that doesn't rip you off.

I know the legal limit is 1.6 mm, but we replace ours at 3 mm.

I think that the garage was underhand but I also think it is best to have all the tyres at the same tread depth, ideally all round but certainly on the same 'axle'.

The other thing is, when replacing all the tyres there are often deals of 4 for the price of 3, so that's unfair too as I guess you weren't offered this.

On the positive side you have got better tyres for dealing with the current wintery weather.

(Biscuit BiscuitBiscuitBiscuit not biscuits - 4 yellow tyres!)
