People who put trainers in washing machine

Group chat on class group a mum said she will chuck trainers in washing machine to be ready for Monday. I usually just clean with a cloth! Do people do this? I’m worried will wreck the trainers. sounds like a good idea. What do u do to clean your children’s trainers?

My machine has a sports shoes setting, use it occasionally if weather is decent to dry outside

CheekyHobson · 11/01/2025 18:51

Thank you for reminding me to throw my trainers in the washing machine, I've been meaning to do it for a week!

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/01/2025 18:54

I've got a large old towel I use for this purpose. It also gives some friction to clean them well. I only do this with canvas/mash. Micellar water on leather or faux leather.

I chuck all the trainers in the washing machine - never ruined trainers to date and not broken machine as of yet. Life is too short for manky trainers! Sometimes will spray them with stain remover beforehand and I dry on radiator

Robinredguest · 11/01/2025 19:00

My washing machine has a trainers cycle. Works fine.

DollopOfFun · 11/01/2025 19:01

Sure. Not for mud, but for general grubbiness, yes.

I find they come up brighter with a dishwasher tab, rather than laundry tabs/powder etc.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/01/2025 19:01

Depends. The £180 trainers looked lovely afterwards.

I was less happy about the £85 necessary to get somebody in to replace the £49 drum seal where one of them wriggled free of the towels and tore it in half + the launderette costs whilst waiting for the replacement seal.

I do. I have a specific wash bag for them. However, my washer was removed the other day for a fault and he told me there were stones in my machine...even though they weren't the reason it broke, I probably won't do it again.

Suzuki76 · 11/01/2025 19:06

I use an old toothbrush. Washing machine disintegrates the insoles.

NotTheGirlYoureLooking4 · 11/01/2025 19:06

Depends on the trainer. If I know they are machine washable (like Skechers, per PP), or if they’re so bad I’d throw them out without a wash, then yes. I usually scrub the soles first, then in a wash bag with a towel in as well to minimise banging. Once washed, they go upside down into the hot water cupboard. I then do a cycle using a washing machine cleaner to disinfect the machine.

Yes, I definitely do this but you have to allow time to dry which takes a few days (although I’ve used a hair dryer before in an emergency).

There is electric inserts in Lidl for drying shoes currently.

lemonchops111 · 11/01/2025 19:07

always do this… multiple times too…never damaged trainers or washing machine… after a few washes just buy new ones but i think the best advice for white trainers is to wash them then put in a brand new pair of laces… they come up like new

OzCalling · 11/01/2025 19:07

I don’t do it with expensive trainers or ones that I’m particularly precious about but yes, for a basic pair of Nikes/New Balance I do it quite regularly. Works a charm!

littlespoonlifer · 11/01/2025 19:10

Yes. Either wrapped in a towel or I've been know to trap the laces on the door and let them hang in there

fetchacloth · 11/01/2025 19:10

I wash my Skechers in the machine no problem 😎.
Before doing so, I just brush any loose dust and dried mud off them, also removing any grit that may be on the sole, remove the inner insole and put them in a padded wash bag.
They take a day or two to dry this time of year, but way cheaper than buying new ones.

Kago2790 · 11/01/2025 18:14

Doesn't it damage the washing machine?

You're best to put in an an old pillow case, or wrapping with an old blanket is even better, as stops them clunking about too much. I clean with a cloth usually, but there are certain instances where they need to have a full wash.

2025mustbebetter · 11/01/2025 19:14

Always do it. I'm too lazy to do otherwise! I've even done leather Nikes in there on a rinse with no detergent. Put them in a pillowcase and in with the sheets or towels to prevent banging around.

Tumble drier on low temp has never shrunk mine in winter, or upside down on a double radiator works, but takes awhile. I'm looking into a padded wash bag now!!

Shufflebumnessie · 11/01/2025 19:14

I've done it once to a pair of mine. Not only did they shrink slightly (& they were on a cool, delicate wash), but I also noticed they started to smell a lot faster once they'd been washed.
I won't do it again.

SofaSurfer1993 · 11/01/2025 19:18

Only made that mistake once, all the drum paddles fell off 😢

Edited

I bought the padded bag from Lakeland a few years ago,
It has two sections and a zip fastening. I think it was quite expensive but a worthwhile investment.😁

AliTheMinx · 11/01/2025 19:22

Yes. I do it often (obviously not for leather trainers). They come up a treat. I put wellies in too!!!,

LemonadeSunshine · 11/01/2025 19:23

God no, life is too short!
I put into bowl with some washing liquid, scrub the insole with a brush, scrub the worst of the mud on the outside, rinse under the tap (warm), before spinning in the machine and drying on the top of the radiator. This is done maybe every six weeks or so, unless they're too muddy.

Fluufer · 11/01/2025 19:27

I wash trainers all the time. Just chuck in with a regular load. Never had a problem.
