A while ago they got rid of the cardboard crates for fruit and veg. I used to pick these up to have for a carrier instead of shopping bags so noticed the change.
Thought wow! As if Tesco/ Sainsburys etc (seems to be most of them now) have invested in reusable plastic crates across their whole supply chain to reuse.
That would be impressive!
However I have just watched a man take a cage of strawberries packed in the original cardboard crates. And have to one by one repack them into the plastic crates. To then I assume take the cardboard ones out back and crush them down.
Why are they doing this!?
It seems more labour, more effort, no reduction in waste. Actually use of more plastics as you now have crates for no reason.
Anyone shed any light?
