Am I being unreasonable to find this especially grim from medically trained professionals?

I have a small business unit with an open back yard where we store our bins and have a staff parking space. It’s not a shared yard we all have our own bit and we all have our own individual trade waste bins and contracts that we pay for individually. Next door but one are a private dentist. I’ve arrived today to find our recently emptied 1200l bin overflowing with rubbish from the private dentists (several packages with their address labels on) worst still are several full large yellow bags which are for the purpose of disposing of hazardous waste (there is no way I’m digging through these to see what’s in them).Oh and there is a trail of used medical gloves across the yard - Am I being unreasonable to expect better from trained medical professionals or is this utterly grim?

Personally, I’d go into the practice and say very loudly “why are you fly tipping your hazardous waste in my bin?”
id also take a lot of photos and inform the council.
just generally make a lot of noise!

Report with images to the cqc and environmental health

missmollygreen · 11/01/2025 15:20

What did they say when you went and spoke to them?

CustardForPudding · 11/01/2025 15:25

Tell environmental health at your local authority. The stuff in yellow bags is by definition clinical waste and must be kept secure.
An employer I worked for got into serious trouble when a clinical waste compound was left unlocked, and someone reported it. They were threatened with prosecution if they didn't put it right promptly.

They aren’t there today - I’ve pulled out some of the bags and dumped them on their drive and left them a note saying I’m returning their rubbish. They are problematic neighbours at the best of times but this is just the icing on the cake

Think this will be my first job Monday morning. The guy who actually owns the practice is the nicest man but he’s hardly there. It’s the day to day staff who’ve done this.

GothicCrackdown · 11/01/2025 15:33

that’s awful! but do be careful you don’t get yourself into trouble as well by moving/re-dumping the stuff on their drive (I’m just wondering if you could be accused of sort of replicating the same thing they’ve done, if someone were to report it).

People who answer like this are always monumental dicks who think they are clever

Allergictoironing · 11/01/2025 15:35

Assuming this is a sort of small business yard, I would also speak to the owners/agents for the yard with a complaint.

There's also a big GDPR issue as you say there's items with customer's personal details, which needs to be reported to the Information Commissioners Office, and possibly the police as disclosing identifying personal information can be a crime.

its The name and address of the dental practice rather than their customers (I’d mentioned this as it’s how I know 100% it’s them that’s dumped the rubbish rather than our other neighbours or just a random passer by. Sorry if that was confusing

I’d phone crime stoppers, just so there’s a record of when it happened and when they are doing.

is the yard managed? If so phone them.

they’ve fly tipped hazardous waste in your property, they have no intention of disposing of it properly.

I don’t understand why you’d wait until Monday??

you can probably do it all online.

I’ve just assumed that environment health dept would be a Monday to Friday opening but not you’ve said that I’ll have a look and see if they can be contacted out of office hours

Careful you don't get charged with flytipping!!! Can't you put them in their own bin?

I'd get a lock put on your bin for starters!!

If they've got a letter box I'd be tempted to start posting some of their rubbish back through the door - all the gloves should fit through nicely!

If the bags are yellow, then these are for infections waste materials, and they need incinerating, not throwing in a bin!! I would take lots of photos and email environmental health immediately!!

Behindthethymes · 11/01/2025 15:48

Just be aware that you’re also guilty of dumping by “returning” it like this op. It’s not right, but legally it becomes your rubbish and your problem to dispose of correctly.

ShalalaIa · 11/01/2025 15:54

Set up a Ring doorbell so you get alerted [and evidenced] when they are doing it. That is the time for speaking to them

Bjorkdidit · 11/01/2025 16:22

Are you sure the dental staff are doing this themselves?

This is such a serious breach of well known requirements that it seems far beyond what even the least professional practice would do. They will know they can't just put their waste in your bins. They're also held to very strict professional standards and live in fear of the CQC or local equivalent.

Someone could have done it to them for whatever reason, although they should be keeping their clinical waste in locked bins.

Definitely ask them about if on Monday, but take a moment to consider that it could be both of you who's the victim here.

Update - we’ve just checked the yard and all waste has been removed

They’ve accessed your private yard twice.
neither time with a shred of consideration of you or your business.

please say you took photos and you’re reporting them anyway!
no matter how nice and smiley the bloke who owns it is, they are treating you like a mug and breaking the law!

NeonGiraffe · 11/01/2025 17:07

If you think the man who owns it is unaware, I'd probably chat to him and give him a chance to talk to his staff, on the understanding you'll report it otherwise . If nothing changes then report.
