To be irritated by Carrie Johnson gushing away about the wonderful NHS from her shiny private hospital room?

You can bet if you or I were admitted for pneumonia we'd be allocated a ward with three others hacking away all night for a week.

If families of politicians (yes including ex PMs) had to use ordinary services, ordinary services would be a lot better.

I've always had a side/private room as I'm neutropenic, never been on a ward

hagchic · 11/01/2025 14:44

Any VIP or well known individual is going to have special arrangements so that their privacy and dignity is maintained.

Otherwise everyone would be filming her/taking photos and possibly worse.

Yes, everyone should have privacy and dignity and no, that's not happening for huge numbers of people at the moment - that is a problem, but I'm not sure the solution is to put CJ or others into a main ward where she might actually be at physical risk.

CoastalCalm · 11/01/2025 14:59

Many of the newer hospitals have private rooms particularly urgent care facilities - it’s years since I’ve been on a ward and have been in hospital many times

DilemmaDelilah · 11/01/2025 15:04

I was in a side room (room on my own with its own loo) for over a week when I developed chemo toxicity. That was because they thought I might have an infection which could spread to the other patients. It wasn't luxury or smart at all! She was probably in a side room because of the risk of infection.

They do put people in store cupboards though and these have doors which can be closed for privacy. Better than being on a corridor or the floor our out in the car park.

She should have had a flu jab anyway.

Meezer · 11/01/2025 15:11

I've had an NHS side room twice, but the 2nd time only briefly. First for medical reasons.
2nd when I was awaiting surgery, as a man (transwoman? don't know- male anyway) was put on my 'single sex' female ward. It was a bit shocking actually, as some of the women were semi conscious and not fully covered up. They moved me into a side room after I nervously explained I would have to discharge myself, but moved me back into the ward 1/2 hour later as the other (conscious) women complained too, so they removed him instead!

ChipshopPickledEgg · 11/01/2025 15:28

Tbh if she's in a private room that's probably for the best last thing I would want if poorly is Boris popping in to see her on the ward.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 11/01/2025 15:31

OP you could have just finished your thread title at 'Johnson'.

devilspawn · 11/01/2025 15:31

It would just be even more pressure on public services, of course you should pay to go private if you can.

Her sister-in-law Rachel gave birth in an NHS hospital, she should have gone private and not drained resources.

BobbyBiscuits · 11/01/2025 14:37

I was really pissed off when I found out CJ had her kids in my local NHS hospital. It's like, you don't even agree with the NHS. Go private and stop blocking a bed from a fucking normal person who actually pays their taxes.

What does she do for work? Presumably she has to pay NI like the rest of us, so even if she is an arsehole, or married one, she's still entitled to use the service.

Even if it doesn't seem fair.

BIossomtoes · 11/01/2025 15:38

The new Papworth Hospital is all single ensuite rooms. The NHS has discovered civilisation at last.

BobbyBiscuits · 11/01/2025 15:42

@AgnesX I know she's entitled. She's very fucking entitled. If you can pay then you should. Especially If you're a Tory who wants to close down the whole service. Or near enough.

Whatever job she has is purely through her husband or connections. I doubt she'd make it as a PA in an SME in the 'real world'.

Arlanymor · 11/01/2025 15:47

Everythingisnumbersnow · 11/01/2025 13:47

It's all very Marie Antoinette. "If I tweet my love of the NHS the proles will love me! (Even as they sleep in wheelchairs waiting for a bed in a&e)"

Apart from the fact that Marie Antoinette was famously maligned throughout history and was a victim of the crazy double standards of the time, not to mention xenophobia, misogyny, and pornographic pamphleteering - poor woman. Sorry I had to mention that as I really feel for her.

But yes I don't like politic-adjacent people proselytising about the NHS when they have very little experience of it themselves.

StormingNorman · 11/01/2025 15:52

Surely better to put her in a side room than have her infect other patients with the flu?

KnittedCardi · 11/01/2025 15:52

She can't be in a private hospital for flu and pneumonia. Private hospitals are elective only. Many hospitals now have single rooms, or you can pay for one if available. I assume she is in the private unit at the JR, for which she will pay. Still NHS care though.

MN.... Everyone should have the same education, abolish private schools. Only poor people should use the NHS, piss off to a private hospital. Can't win.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2025 15:55

I’ve posted on other threads about the hell on earth A&E has been for my husband since late October.
He is having life-saving surgery in 2 weeks, there’s no option. immensely grateful for the care he’s received when he finally gets to the right place/person but hope to Christ we never have to engage in critical circumstances again.

Last paragraph. So true.

MichaelandKirk · 11/01/2025 16:01

Fgs! She pays taxes. Why can’t she use the NHS? What about people who don’t pay anything towards the NHS? Should they be stopped from using it. I am a higher rate tax payer. I dont use the NHS much thank goodness but when my late Mum was in hospital conditions were awful. Couldn’t find her on the system, even though she is registered with her local surgery for donkey’s years, told me they were checking her out by 1000 one morning.

I was due to meet her at the care home. I know no one would call me to say she had been delayed. Wards don’t answer their phones much these days.

Its a complete shambles.

She won't be in a private hospital with flu and pneumonia, private hospitals only do elective surgery.

I didn't have private births, I gave birth in an NHS delivery suite but I still had a private room on an NHS ward for the week I stayed in hospital afterwards, it was £130 a night in 2008 so I'm sure the NHS will be getting some contribution if she's in a side room.

Many private hospitals do emergency surgery and admit for things like pneumonia. However she states in her post that she was in John Radcliffe so was clearly simply in a private room or the private section of the hospital - not in a private hospital

Why would they be given a contribution? DS was in a side room in hospital because he was seriously ill. No-one demanded a contribution for that.

Wendolino · 11/01/2025 13:55

Her room looks very like the private room my relative was in for 3 weeks at our bog standard local NHS hospital. It was en suite and very clean too, and she's never been married to a famous politician.

'It was very clean'?! How amazing Wendolino, above and beyond 👏👏👏

Chasingpringles · 11/01/2025 16:17

I've been in a private room before when I was a patient over a week. The nurses took pity and felt I needed some rest away from other people so moved me.

Does she pay taxes? Not sure she actually works nowadays?
