To not want to hear any more about the Californian fires

Viviennemary · 10/01/2025 22:18

For a start I do feel a lot of sympathy for folk who have lost everything in those fires. But what is the point of telling us night after night about the devastation these fires are causing, we can't do anything about it nobody can. And America is a rich country and can afford to rebuild. Unlike Gaza where folk have been left with nothing, and hardly had much in the first place.

Coldanddamp · 10/01/2025 23:35

@Mustard3 maybe look at other sources

Ilovelifeverymuch · 10/01/2025 23:37

You're not unreasonable, I think the UK and to be fair many other countries consume an unhealthy amount of news about the US.

Regardless of the cause, please try and have a little empathy for all who are suffering in the world right now, not just the ones you deem worthy.

Well said

The people of California didn’t vote in a terrorist organisation to govern them nor did they murder their neighbours.

LongDarkTeatime · 10/01/2025 23:43

To be fair to the OP the images of devastation in California also reminded me of the images of Gaza.
Hopefully there will be far far fewer deaths, injuries and trauma in California.

The worst fires in history in a country that is our closest ally is
pretty important news to most right-thinking people. Makes more sense than fretting about Gaza - a place that we share no cultural ties with. If anything our values are antithetical.

You think that the people of Gaza don’t have the same values as people in the UK? What values are you talking about, exactly?

Atrocities are happening across the world. Considering the atrocities happening elsewhere, Gaza has received a lot of coverage - why Gaza has more attention than, for example, Sudan, is probably a contentious point. Do you have any thoughts to share about the Maghreb? Or the Uighurs?

But if atrocities are taking place somewhere, does that mean nothing else can be discussed?

Snorlaxo · 10/01/2025 23:45

I don’t watch the BBC so can’t comment on their coverage specifically but they fire is massive news and I’m expecting it to be even after the inauguration. Things in the UK are wet and cold so seeing a fire somewhere warm and dry is a little surreal but this is climate change in action. If politicians have been skimping on measures that would save lives then shame on them. (I’m not sure of the details but lots of accusations of this on SM)

I hope that the emergency services are able to remain safe and save as many pets and humans as possible. There will be ordinary people deeply affected by this disaster and I hope that they will get help - both financial and practical. It is scary that insurers stopped insuring property in that area only a few months ago.

There’s plenty of Brits in the US as well as people who have ties to the place through work and family. I think that they will want coverage. I want less of the which famous person had to flee their home and more of what is happening to the ordinary people and firefighters. Do they have infrastructure like they do in states where Tornadoes are common? Is Biden sending resources ?

We should have left “what about Gaza? “ in 2024. What is happening there is horrific but there’s horrific stuff happening elsewhere too and highlighting those issues doesn’t take away from the atrocities of Gaza. Weren’t those people saying “What about Ukraine? “ Using Gaza to score points is shallow behaviour.

Plenty of us fortunate to have been blessed with with more than one brain cell care very much.

I find it really disturbing that some people have become so divisive that they lose any critical thinking ability & everything is just so binary.

Have you actually read my previous post as compared to YourCrispyBalonz
who 'doesn't give a F about a few fires in la la land' ??

ladyflower23 · 10/01/2025 23:51

NetZeroZealot · 10/01/2025 22:53

The fires in California show that no-one however affluent can be protected from the effects of climate change.
if we don’t do something NOW deaths and suffering caused by climate change will dwarf the impacts of any wars.

Yes, this is exactly why it's big news.

Appalonia · 10/01/2025 23:51

Wow what a nasty, unsympathetic person you are. What if it was YOUR house that was burning down? Wouldn't you be devastated...?

WooleyMunky · 10/01/2025 23:52

BabyShock879 · 10/01/2025 22:23

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down. OK, really sad. Some of the scenes are apocalyptic. Yes, it is newsworthy. But does it have to be on ALL the fucking time? Surely other stuff is going on they could report on.

It's a distraction pushed by the media to divert from the imminent financial collapse caused by the current government.

NattyTurtle59 · 10/01/2025 23:53

SabreIsMyFave · 10/01/2025 23:07

You think LA is all white people?

What a breathtakingly ludicrous, ignorant, and ill informed comment.

Educate yourself! Only around 37% of L.A. is white!

Why let facts get in the way of a bit of race baiting though eh?! Hmm

Well said! Reading this, and other threads on the subject, show just how ignorant and ill informed many of the general public are, especially about other countries.

"financial collapse" thats always been a risk, besides on the websites there are many news stories ?

its like people say this part of the news is too much but on the news websites themselves are many articles so its like whats the issue ? news is news

Nanny0gg · 10/01/2025 23:57

Coldanddamp · 10/01/2025 22:34

Yeah I'm bored of it too. Rich people have their houses burned down

Some of the firefighters & police officers have lost homes, are they rich?

It's nothing to do with big houses

How would you feel if you lost everything that was important to you (bar family)

Insurance can't replace that

And because of the frequency of the wildfires, not everyone was able to be insured either - rich and poor

And you can be upset/concerned/aghast at more than one thing at a time

No, it hasn't always been a risk.
The shockingly short-sighted economic policies of the new Labour government have predicated a potential short and hard recession.

Free the hostages.

Your whataboutism is bs!
How many Palestinians is Israel holding on prisons, many of them children, many without charge
If you actually still believe that this is about hostages you're as ludicrous as your username!

I think it's an important story because it illustrates the impact of climate change. This will be happening in Europe in 50 years or less.

But some of the reporting is insensitive, given the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Just had to turn off the news as couldn't stand listening to the guy whining about losing his olympic medals in the fire...they are just things FFS...people in Gaza are losing their children every single day.

When is the world going to help the children of Gaza? That's the news we need to hear.

placemats · 10/01/2025 23:58

A friend has posted a video of the smoke clouds and it's horrific, her and husband are safe. However she did say that the air is not safe to breathe. Everyone is wearing masks.

NattyTurtle59 · 10/01/2025 23:58

LostBrainCell · 10/01/2025 23:14

I think the wider issue is we are served up US news constantly on the BBC. Yes the fires are appalling and the issue of climate change is of interest. But the coverage is vast dominating most of the news programme. While just this week we’ve had Elon Musk influencing British politics.

Yet we haven’t heard much at all about Gaza this week for example. And sadly this is a war that is going to impact our country. I think OP is saying they’d like to hear about global news on the BBC more. Sudan is rarely reported on. Many people in the UK couldn’t even tell you where it is. Does Sudan influence the global stage and our politics? No, sadly not. We can still care but not if we don’t hear about these events in the first instance.

What more do you actually want to hear about Gaza? The same thing is happening day after day after day, please tell me how seeing it every night helps anybody?

As for US news constantly on the TV. I'm in NZ and we see every flood, every big snowfall, every time the temperature reaches 30 degrees in the UK, which is far more boring to us as it's nothing we don't have here every year. These fires are huge, I really don't think many of you can grasp that.

Stillnormal · 10/01/2025 23:59

it is interesting to think about the difference between the certain, predictable consequences of political actions and decision making that lead to bombing civilians unrestrainedly in their own beds for example, and the consequences of the same cultural norms and forces applied to places of peace and progress (as opposed to war). It's the same stuff. It's hard to know really which is more terrifying - the deliberate violence that we bear witness to and wave through, or the flood waters or fire we find ourselves in.
