Your composite front door cost? With a side panel as well as it's for our porch (bog standard size porch in a 1930's terraced).

Had quote yesterday from a very well known
company and I'm still a bit in shock at the cost!

I was quoted for misted glass side panel and black composite front door, nothing too jazzy, no letter box or knocker just the door & side panel.

Quote was..... £6,186.32 I mean I wasn't expecting it to be cheap but this seems bloody expensive.

Pretty much paid the same as you for what sounds like exactly the same door set up, frosted panel to the side floor to ceiling.
and it’s got a big crack in it where the letterbox is! We’ve had it about 5 years.

blahple · 10/01/2025 20:55

£1,700 in 2022.
Dark blue outside and white inside, 2 glass panels in the door with a pretty design, spyhole knocker, handle and letterbox, antisnap lock and frosted narrow side panel from about knee height up.

Checkatrade are usually helpful for giving guides on sensible price ranges for most things.

Composite doors are expensive. We had quote of about £5k for something similar eight years ago. It did include having the doorway made wider to fit my wheelchair through, but on the other hand it didn’t include VAT because it was a modification for a disability, so I think the two might balance each other out. And given how much everything has gone up in price since then I can’t imagine you’ll find it any cheaper elsewhere. We ended up going with UPVC painted to a very nice colour of our choice. Much cheaper and it looks nice. Yes the composite door would have been nicer, but nowhere near enough to justify the price difference.

Actually this has more info and says updated in September

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/01/2025 21:20

In 2018 I paid about 4k for a composite door but also windows both sides and a window over the top of the door.

itsalwaysthesame · 10/01/2025 23:18

Thank you for all
I'll have look at check a trade, is composite not the same as UPVC? Think I'll need to google a bit more.

I thought it would be around £2,500-£3,000 but not double that, the salesman said it's cost of living etc but I still think that's crazy expensive.

We've just spent 3yrs renovating and had over 20 trades on what had been a derelict property. Not one is on check-a-trade! It might be different in other areas, but anyone I know who has contacted someone on check-a-trade has been dodgy! All our trades had far too much work via word of mouth, via other trades etc so no need to advertise elsewhere. I'd be extremely cautious using check-a-trade and seek independent reviews if you do engage with someone from there!

In terms of a door, we have a 1930's house also. For composite (which I'm 99% is also UPVC), I think we were quoted £4,000. This was 2yrs ago. We ended up having an oak door made which was a similar price- but more in keeping with the other oak around our porch and rest of the house.

Notaflippinclue · 10/01/2025 23:34

Local company £3000

itsalwaysthesame · 10/01/2025 23:40

@BoomBoomZoomies oh that's lovely and very similar to what I'd like, could you share where you got it from? I'm in the SE / Herts area

@JC03745 oak sounds lovely, i would prefer to go through recommendations too

You've described ours! We paid slightly less as was pre Covid I guess. £1200

AnnieMay55 · 11/01/2025 00:30

We've just had ours replaced. It is by Rockdoor. It seems good quality and not as much as that. I would get some more quotes. We just had all windows and door replaced and one quote came back over 60% higher than the small local company we used.

I didn't suggest using someone from checkatrade, I always use personal recommendations if I can! I said they do posts that give sensible price guides for most work. I use it to see if a quote is a rip off.

Has the screenshotted table in it. They do the same for basically any job you can think of and it's really useful to get a ball park figure of what price to expect.

BoomBoomZoomies · 11/01/2025 08:09

@itsalwaysthesame
I am Hampshire/Wilts border.
The company was Outlook Windows but they are local to the area, not a large company x

bike50 · 11/01/2025 08:20

If your SE Herts my experience it get more than one quote. Ask your neighbours who they used. We had new door fitted last year and quotes varied a lot… we had quotes 2-3K more than what we finally went for. Also try a couple of companies slightly out of area that advertise they travel. St A companies quote high in my experience. They don’t seem to be short of work.

blahple · 11/01/2025 08:25

Ask your house insurance who they use for door replacements as well. We used the company that did our back windows for an insurance claim and they were much more reasonable than the other quotes we got.

BeyondMyWits · 11/01/2025 08:37

Used a small local firm who were brilliant. 4 years ago... £1700 including fitting for door navy outer, white inner, including handles, lock, glass panels, letterbox, side panel with privacy glass. Neighbour is getting them to do just about the same for her, it is now £2200.

Would get quotes locally as we tried a couple of big firms who quoted ridiculous prices by comparison... in the £4-6k bracket. Just for the "trusted" name.

Isthisanewme · 11/01/2025 08:46

I paid just under 2K for mine. Has frosted glass either side of door. This was last year. I'm in Bedfordshire area

JC03745 · 11/01/2025 10:37

@blahple Thank you for the info about price guides on Check-a-trade. I had no idea they had those.

OP- I posted up thread, but checked what we paid 2yrs ago, Sth East. For a side door, we got a composite, barn door. We bought a standard size and amended the door frame to fit it. If we'd had to have a bespoke door, it would have cost alot more. That was £1400.

We then had a local joiner/carpenter make our oak front door. We had an odd width and the frame was the original 1930's- so we'd either have the replace the lot, or get a bespoke door made. We had the door made and it was £3,500 with a glass panel at head height.

gingersnappz · 11/01/2025 10:42

We actually had a quote yesterday for a composite door, handle with thumb release, letter box and knocker with two glass side panels. Door is coloured with three glass windows through the middle.

Quote was £2500 including VAT, fitting and taking away all of the old stuff.

SeaShellsSanctuary180 · 11/01/2025 10:45

If its a well known company, don't bother , you are paying for their advertising manager, call centre etc etc. The chances are you will be getting an inferior product as a result.

We had an Endurance composite door two years ago for £1800. Not sure how much side panel would add.

Recommendations on your local area Facebook page are often a good guide when you see the same name brought up by a large number of people

Alarae · 11/01/2025 11:28

Ours was £5.5k, which was for the door and a medium side panel.

We had quotes from three local firms and they were all in the same ballpark. Based in SE.

DreamW3aver · 11/01/2025 11:52

Always use a reputable local company for anything like this, they'll be much cheaper than a well known one and probably have a better service

About two years ago I paid around £2k for a dorr similar to what you describe although I may be in a cheaper area
