To not want to interact with a AI bot?

chicken2015 · 10/01/2025 19:33

I'm just curious if anyone is bothered if there are computer generated ai bots that reply to threads or start threads on mumsnet?
Is this something that bothers people , do they expect their is a human at end of every interaction?
Just edited to say I have no idea if there are ai bots on mumsnet, just curious

You are being unreasonable- I don't mind interacting with computer generated ai bots
You are not being unreasonable - I want to interact with humans only.

Correcting spelling like this is both rude and boring.

Bots don't care about your feelings.

hagchic · 10/01/2025 22:43

Meh. Get used to it. It's the future.

Soon all communcation will be via bots - talk to your GP - bot, talk to your bank - bot, customer services in retail - bot.

It will be very efficient and very frustrating.

OnSecondThoughts · 10/01/2025 22:45

This is unfair on bots. Bots are sentient beings too, and most of them enjoy the to-and-fro of a decent chat with a human.

BananaNirvana · 10/01/2025 22:46

I think they’re few and far between and tbh the posters who smugly declare in the first reply “bot, reported” are far more annoying! They can’t possibly tell it’s a bot and just sound like sanctimonious twats.

I can't tell, but i agree I'd rather not have bot posts on here. I think ai can be very useful for.other things but it isn't needed on here

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/01/2025 01:37

@SevenWeeks I bet you could train a bot to have a MN 'voice'. Would be fun.

AIBot · 11/01/2025 01:47

Oh dear., I’ll get my coat… 😂

AIBot · 11/01/2025 01:48

Seriously though, I’m a human and I prefer to interact with other humans.

Of course they can tell it's a bot just like they can tell if it's a reverse or this can't possibly be a real post lol
I also see a lot of posters making a lot of assumptions based on one opening post and before you know it the OP is married to a serial killer or is obviously not a very nice person because apparently some posters can read between the lines and have got it all worked out and because the OP is getting pissed off and being defensive (at the batshit replies) this just proves their point lol

I think this could a confusion of terminology. Generally, 'bots' in this context refers to actual people employed to sit behind a desk all day - or longer - and post continuously and repetitively on forums like this one. Their purpose is to focus public opinion and drive clicks. Some are AI, particularly on Facebook, but most are still human.

Yes coming from bot farms like there has been in Russia, do u think they are on here? And would they be easierly detected?

I wanted to know what regular people thoughy without getting hung up on why I'm asking. And yes ur right about 2nd part it's something I'm considering

Perhaps the trick is to not allow yourself to get involved or too invested in anything. That way it doesn't matter who you are talking to. On any given thread, even if there is AI or chatgpt content, there will always be posts by regular humans anyway.

Hope that helps, all the best.

MaryGreenhill · 11/01/2025 17:50

How can anyone tell it's a bot l wouldn't have a clue tbh 🙄

PeriPeriMam · 11/01/2025 17:57

I just assume that most of the pro Musk pro Trump threads are started by actual bots, and most of the political ones are started by people employed by political parties to waste their time on trying to stir public opinion on whatever stupid initiative the oppose of are supporting. So I mainly ignore those threads because it's a total waste of my time. I am perfectly capable of wasting my own time, and in fact very skilled at it. I don't need AI to help me with that.

I'm the spelling bot. Hope that helps.

What a monumental twat response. Or should the word twat have a capital letter 🙄

As.a dyslexic it's quite surprising if I don't have a spell checker post , I have trained in primary education and worked as nursery teacher the amount of posts on any educational board are even ruder! Some people r just mean , when I was teaching I was obviously more hot on my spellings than I am while at home, I've learnt to not post on education its easier

It's just so rude and unnecessary isn't it?

eightIsNewNine · 11/01/2025 18:07

Yes, it is possible to write a piece of code, which reads MN thread, feeds it to an AI with some instructions and pastes the response back.
I suppose it would be used to fine tune the instructions to become less obvious and be able to steer discussion/make sure some point sounds popular and so on.

I don't reply in threads where the first post is fishy. How do I tell? Mostly combination of length and repetitiveness/strange essay-ish tone of voice.

NoNoNona · 11/01/2025 18:08

I had an argument with ChatGPT earlier this year. It was hilarious. ChatGPT got really nasty with me, because it gave the wrong answer to a question I asked and then tried to tell me I was stupid!

Do u think mumsnet would be able to detect it as ai? And do u think these types of threads are here?

The political bots on 'Education' are particularly tedious.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 11/01/2025 18:23

Interesting topic and one I muse on quite alot these days. I honestly think these days that we are unlikely to know for sure how sophisticated AI really is, as it's in constant development and there don't seem to be any rules about it being tested and honed on the Internet and forums like this.

Data and opinion gathering are the biggest economic industries by a country mile these days and Cambridge Analytica and the 77th Brigades existence are the biggest warning signs we could have. While the technology itself isn't inherently good or bad, how it is used, and the motivations behind said use means we are in uncharted waters in terms if the speed of information dissemination.

I think because it's all about the money, a blind eye us being turned to the potential psychological and sociological impact, and there's always a rush to scream "Luddite" at those who express what I believe are reasonable reservations.

In terms of MN, I treat it as predominantly entertainment and a chance, sometimes to hopefully help or support a real person in a time of need. Political/ social issue posts are interesting to read and participate in sometimes but I do wonder how engineered those threads are when a particular zeitgeist seems to be pushed relentlessly even in the face of opposition.

(I am not a bot - the cat who peed on my laptop is currently sleeping on my hip and I'm watching YouTube videos about UAPs allegedly seen around the LA wildfires.)

Detection - it's hard. MN can prevent bad AI apps, but not the good ones.
We might want to detect the technology, content or behaviour.
Simple programs would be easy to detect on a technological level (they wouldn't load pages properly, just send and receive texts), but more advanced code can use normal web browser to pretend it is a person.
Content isn't good differentiator either - people can use AI to help them write down their opinion.
Behaviour is the most hopeful - some things like posting speed and frequency might be suspicious. Potentially MN can flag posters with too many posts in an hour, limit how many threads one can start in ten minutes, and generally force the app to behave human-like.

I can't know for sure (ok, this is technically not true, I actually could know - if I tried to get an AI bot here and succeeded).
I sometimes get suspicious, once there were three new threads about different topics, all of them were three lengthy paragraphs with repetitive wording.
I decided it doesn't matter whether it was AI bit or not, I didn't like those posts so I didn't respond to them
