To think the bloke who told me off for taking grit out of the grit bin should fuck off

This morning, I had to get my elderly neighbour to a hospital appointment. She has bone cancer in both hips. Her drive way was very slippery this morning. A fall for her could be fatal. She's on crutches.

I drove to the nearest grit bin I could find, filled a bag for life, probably a quarter full and put it down on her front door step, drive way and the pavement outside her property.

As I was putting it into my bag a bloke stopped and reprimanded me, telling me it's not for private use. I explained the situation and but he wasn't interested.

What an absolute cock.

They absolutely are for public use and I hope after that he meets someone who puts his teeth out.

That was lovely you helped your neighbour.

DangerousAlchemy · 15/01/2025 19:45

Some of the responses on here are bonkers! How many of us have driven a poorly neighbour to hospital at 7.30am for a scan in icy conditions? Good for you OP. I had no idea grit bins were only for public footpaths/roads (I've never used any). The bloke was a twat to behave like that even after you told him about your neighbour's bone cancer. If the council want us to use grit bins appropriately then maybe they should inform us all where we can/can't use them!

Navyontop · 15/01/2025 19:49

This is where the phrase ‘Get F^*ked’ comes in handy.
explain kindly once, maybe twice, then the phrase comes out.

Andsoitbeganagain · 15/01/2025 19:55

Take heart op, you probably made his day by giving him a reason to compose another outraged email to the council.

He did know the back story! I've already explained that. He did know the back story and I wasn't rude to him at all. I also haven't been very rude about him! You're just making stuff up.

You have and are being rude about him.
However justified you feel for your actions, you admit that you didn’t know that grit bins aren’t for general use on private property.
Why are you getting so angry when in fact you are in the wrong?

There’s a big clue to their purpose, by where they are positioned…have you noticed that they are positioned on steep roads not by people’s steep drives?

NavyTurtle · 15/01/2025 20:06

Most councils place yellow grit bins around their towns so that, if a gritter cannot clear your road, you can safely do so yourself.

Cornecopia · 15/01/2025 20:11

Jesus Christ. Op is hardly sneaking round regularly robbing grit bins.
this was a one off for an elderly lady who desperately needed it.
some people need to get a fucking grip

Imagine feeling so much glee pointing out that someone trying to help has done something wrong.
morally your a twat

Lols. You’re the one posting to say how great you are for helping this lady- of course you are, well done.
Is that what you are after?
Im just saying that you’re wrong about grit bins - and you are a very rude- kind- but rude person.

And I’m not the OP either. It’s a big fall from that high horse

I would have been a bit Hmm at someone driving up to a grit bin too, but I would never have said anything. I used some from my nearest one (within walking distance) for the public footpath between our street and the main road. I don't think any of the neighbours have used it for a driveway but I can see why you did in the circumstances.

Why would you have felt it was off someone driving instead of walking when you also take it? You tale it for free the same as them. It's literally for peoples safety, I would never think badly of anyone doing it just because they didn't walk - surely the point is the path is too slippery to walk on!

Rachybabez · 15/01/2025 20:40

Technically he is right, it's not for public use on private property, you'd think people had bigger things to worry about though

Rachybabez · 15/01/2025 20:49

A simple Google gives you the answer. You had good intentions though

It was 7.30 in the morning, we had an hours drive to the hospital. I didn't have time to drive around to see which shops were open and which ones were selling grit.

Can't believe some of the responses on here. What an earth is this world coming to.

The actual second hand embarrassment I’m feeling for these crazy people on this thread over flipping council grit 🤦🏼‍♀️ Pokers up their holes they’re that straight. Sad, pathetic curtain twitchers you can smell them through their comments 😂

I think this was more of a moral dilemma. Which isn’t really much of a dilemma, because of course she was in the right using a little bit of grit to help an elderly neighbour with bone cancer get to her hospital appointment.

He was right, but still being an officious dick
You were wrong for telling him to fuck off. You could have just smiled and carried on. Or responded in another way.

I didn't tell him to fuck off. I was very polite to him during the interaction, I was thinking the whole time that he should fuck off, hence my thread title 'to think'.

I've learned nothing from this thread about The Grit Rules, but I've learned more than I would have liked about people that won't let the facts get in the way of a bit of idle brained outrage, and plenty about petty minded busybodies.

Technically he’s right, it is intended for use on public roads / pavements.

I live on a steep road, there’s several grit bins at the side of the road. If we get snow / ice and no one’s been out to spread grit on the road, it’s very common to see cars trying and failing to drive up the road before sliding down backwards. It’d be a real problem if the grit ran out because lots of people were taking it to use on their driveways.

Having said that, I can understand why you acted as you did in your circumstances. I think most people would have done the same thing.

Although I’d advise buying some rock salt for driveways to have in for future occasions where it’s too icy for your neighbour to safely get from her door to a car. It’s usually easily available from Amazon or B&Q or similar hardware shops in the winter.

Nope I've never noticed that. I live SE UK. can't say there are tons of grit bins round here 🤷‍♀️

There's a not small demographic of men of a certain age who really like to make themselves feel important lecturing younger women on trivial bllsht.
Never try and explain yourself, just tell them to f*ck off, they need to hear it more often than they do.
