To wonder what your kids eat for breakfast before school

DancyNancy · 10/01/2025 00:15

Following on from a thread where a mum found herself in a pickle and had to give a snack based breakfast....and MN posters felt a banana and a granola bar was deemed a horrifically inadequate quantity of breakfast I'm really curious to know what people's kids eat in the morning.

My lot are aged 9-12yrs.

2 out of 3 are often not hungry first thing but I insist on at least milk.

One always has cereal or porridge
One of the inconsistents has a glass of milk and then possibly a bagel or pitta with peanut butter
One will have milk and might have natural yogurt, or bagel, or banana with peanut butter.

They have 2 breaks in school so eat at 11 & 1, and then again at home around 3:30.

To me a banana and a granola bar is quite a hefty breakfast, and equates quantity wise to a bowl of cereal or porridge 🤔

I don't understand the horror response to that as a breakfast...... enlighten me??

choice between:
porridge (I always have that so happy to put more on if anyone wants it) with fruit
cereal (corn flakes or shredded wheat, no sugary ones)
toast

drinks: tea and/or water (not old enough for coffee)

Ilovecakey · 10/01/2025 00:18

Positivenancy · 10/01/2025 00:23

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/01/2025 00:25

DS10 usually has toast and a glass of milk. He might have yoghurt, a banana or an oat bar but it’s usually toast. Or a bagel.

DD 16 likes to have muesli on a school day.

Ohhhthedrama · 10/01/2025 00:25

Toast or bagel with Nutella or peanut butter.
Granola bar
Coco pops or frosties
Starbucks bacon & cheese egg bites
To drink tea, coffee, or chocolate milk. I usually leave the house before them, so getting breakfast is down to them. I don't police it.

BetweenTheBottleOfWineAndTheLookInYourEyes · 10/01/2025 00:30

Mostly porridge with fruit. Sometimes overnight oats with fruit, a bagel, Weetabix, Shreddies or yogurt with nuts and fruit. Very occasionally, if rushing, a protein bar.

They all went through times of not wanting anything for breakfast so I’m just glad they eat something. They have a good diet overall.

TadpolesInPool · 10/01/2025 00:39

13year old = marmite sandwich or bowl of cereals. Plus banana and occasionally a homemade cookie. Juice or milk to drink

10 year old = nutella sandwich and a plain yogurt. Drinks water.

Whatyearisit20 · 10/01/2025 00:43

One
has a smoothie because some issues means she finds eating first thing impossible but the school then allow if hungry to have a snack whenever she wasn’t before lunch - so I pack - cereal bar / rice cakes / fruit : yogurt.

second is polar opposite to the first 🤣 and he will only eat a hot breakfast every day !
do not ever suggest cereal

Wibblywobblybobbly · 10/01/2025 00:47

For my 5 year old usually porridge with frozen berries, flaxseed and chis. Plus a handful of nuts separately (we rotate between pecans, pine nuts and cashews). Water to drink. He needs lots of healthy fats to keep weight on.

Occasionally a nut butter bagel with fruit.

Anywherebuthere · 10/01/2025 00:59

It varies
Biscuit
Biscuit with milk
Cereal
Nothing

Older ones , sometimes they take lunch, sometimes they buy it at school. Sometimes they dont want to have anything.

Younger often finishes lunch in the car at hometime because they would rather play than finish lunch at lunchtime.

But they are all hungry by the time they walk back through the door and head straight to the kitchen to see whats for dinner

They have heavier breakfasts on the weekend

I pick my battles.

50andfabulous · 10/01/2025 02:46

We've been homeschooling last year, so my 14 year old would make her own food when she got up, normally noodles, fried egg and mini spring rolls - kinda doubled as lunch (brunch). My 11 year old has hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, avocado or gnocchi with cheese, very occasionally nutrigrain. They go back to school this year (Australia) so I looked at this thread for some ideas 😁

Poppins21 · 10/01/2025 06:13

All sorts - sometimes I make overnight oats or rice pudding (if this is breakfast food is a whole other thread) served with fruit compotes or nuts. Pancakes sometimes. My daughter likes herb and mushroom omlette (super easy in the omlette maker) served with baked tomato. A simple bacon sandwiches or breakfast burritos with spicy beans are also a favourite. Breakfast is often 2 courses sweet followed by savoury and we often will try things from different parts of the world

Myself and my daughter wake up ravenous monsters, where as my husband does even think about food until gone 10. So we plan our breakfasts as it’s our mum and daughter thing.

The king of breakfasts is left overs - Monday morning left over roast or Saturday morning a carefully curated leftover curry. I dream of my breakfasts though

We have a smoothie too each morning with the sweet part of breakfast and tea with the savoury. This thread has made me realise I am obsessed with eating breakfast.

We have rice pudding with cherries and refried bean and scrambled egg burritos this morning. Smoothie is fig and date and earl grey tea. Happy eating everyone,

SpaceJamtart · 10/01/2025 06:21

Cereal, usually cornflakes, shreddies, weetabix or cheerios
Museli
Porridge (only in the cold months)

They used to eat toast but have gone off it.

CheekyHobson · 10/01/2025 06:24

Porridge with yogurt and fruit
Cornflakes with yoghurt and fruit
Crumpet with peanut butter or Nutella and piece of fruit
Ham and cheese croissant
Scrambled eggs on half an English muffin
Smoothie with a piece of toast and whatever topping

AnnaKorine · 10/01/2025 06:26

Porridge or yoghurt mainly but can also be toast or crumpets with honey or egg on toast. We often have a smoothie as well.

NoNoNona · 10/01/2025 06:29

Small glass of freshly squeezed juice - could be fruit or veg
Boiled egg with wholegrain toasted Marmite soldiers or scrambled egg on wholegrain toast or a toasted cheese & veg sandwich. Sometimes sardines or avocado on toast.
Hot drink or hot, clear soup
Savoury porridge
Kedgeree
Prefer not to start the day with sugar/sweet stuff to avoid mid-morning slumps.
Where we live (not UK) school starts very early and they will be home for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30. Lunch being the mail meal of the day hereabouts.

MumofCandRA · 10/01/2025 06:31

Porridge
Eggs and toast
Natural yoghurt with fruit

Whyherewego · 10/01/2025 06:33

Teen boys.... one generally eats leftovers. The other huge portion of scrambled eggs and toast.
They used to eat cereal but not any more

colinshmolin · 10/01/2025 06:33

Both DDs (now adults ) were nightmare breakfast eaters. They hated cereal, toast. We went through all sorts of phases- pancakes, cereal bars, pasties, fruit, muffins, crumpets. Eventually when they were about 16 I gave in and conceded they were not breakfast people. Eldest now has toast or croissant for breakfast and middle one who's 22 still doesn't eat first thing.

Youngest who has asd has toast, apple, grapes and berries every day.

christmaslatte · 10/01/2025 06:35

Cereal every weekday.
Porridge sometimes on weekends.

OP like you, I think a banana and a granola bar sounds fine.

Simonjt · 10/01/2025 06:36

Usually puri and semolina, sometimes I’ll make chicpeas to go with the puri instead, if he makes his own breakfast (9) he makes scrambled eggs and I add some seasoned blackbeans for him.

Simonjt · 10/01/2025 06:36

However a banana and granola bar are also fine
