To think this is expensive for a dental implant?

Posting for traffic as I have no experience of implants.

I have 2 upper front teeth missing due to a failed Maryland Bridge which has been glued back twice but obviously won't now stay in place. It has actually lasted quite a long time.

So I can have a denture, fixed bridge or implant. I don't want a denture and am disappointed to find that a fixed bridge will involve shaving down two perfectly healthy teeth and may last as little as 8 years.

I've had a quote from a dentist (South Wales) and it's just over £4k! It includes 2 hygienist visits, all scans and a single implant with a bridge. This seems like a lot of money compared to an NHS bridge which is from £350 at my regular dentist.

I won't be going to Turkey so I wonder is this a typical cost and is it worth it? Can you eat foods like apples and nuts with a fixed bridge and do implants ever break? For me, the functionality and longevity is more important than cosmetic appearance.

No it’s not expensive for 2 front implants. My DH paid £3.5 grand for just one front tooth but that did include a bone graft.

oatmy · 09/01/2025 17:41

I paid £2k for a single implant and that was 16 years ago. Well worth it, it is just like a real tooth (well, better because it can't go wrong!)

countrygirl99 · 09/01/2025 17:53

I was quoted £2800ish for a single implant 3 years ago.

CherryRipe1 · 09/01/2025 17:54

That's about right.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 09/01/2025 17:54

Absolutely the going rate.
FGS do not go to Turkey. You will regret it.

shes said in her OP she won’t be

CBStrike · 09/01/2025 17:56

I paid £2.6k a couple of years ago for one. It was worth it as its just like having a real tooth again. Couldn't stand the idea of a bridge etc

LouisvilleSlugger · 09/01/2025 17:57

That’s very reasonable for 2 front implants.

There’s a huge amount of work and time involved with implant surgery. It’s expensive for a reason. In my experience, it was worth every penny and all the hours in the chair.

sunshineandshowers40 · 09/01/2025 17:58

That's sounds about right. I had an implant 6 years ago and paid over £2K.

doihaveacase · 09/01/2025 17:58

Sounds very reasonable for the U.K. I have two singles and paid around 2k euros each. They're well worth the money. I can't even remember which one of my molars is the implant.

titchy · 09/01/2025 17:59

I paid £1200 15 years ago for a bridge attached to a crown. So price seems ok for two. Like you I was wary of having a healthy (front in my case) tooth filed down, but am really pleased with the result. I'd certainly expect it to last many more years and feel quite confident biting into hard food.

Mrsbloggz · 09/01/2025 17:59

It's alot of £££ but it's pretty much what I'd expect.

titchy · 09/01/2025 17:59

Mine also replaced a Maryland!

writingfever · 09/01/2025 18:04

Sounds right OP, sorry, it's a really expensive surgical treatment. The dental implant itself will cost half of the quote, and you shouldn't go with a cheaper Korean/Israeli brand, but stick with the German/Swiss ones that they use here. They will also send the crown (which they fit on top of the metal implant and which looks like the tooth/teeth we can see) to a lab which will colour match it. I actually think you've got a good quote and if they're doing only one implant with a crown that will look a pair of front teeth, then it sounds like they are strategically trying to ensure you don't pay extra. Sorry if you know all this already! I know this because we've been doing the research for my partner who needs two molar implants. We were quoted 12K and are finally doing it in my home country India, so it's working out cheaper and my parents are hosting us but we will have to make three trips. Just in case anyone is worried about the decision we've made - we are advised by my best friend who is a specialist dentist in a US university and we are working with a uni prof maxillofacial dentist in India who comes highly recommended by another family member who got a full mouth of implants with the same dentist.

Daleksatemyshed · 09/01/2025 18:06

Be aware Op that implants don't last a lifetime - the average time they last is between 15 - 20 years. I'm not trying to put you off but if you're quite young you'll be looking at replacing them at some point

1457bloom · 09/01/2025 18:16

£4k is ok but you have to make sure it is accurately aligned.

treehugger4 · 09/01/2025 18:22

I paid £3500 for a single front tooth in 2023. A straightforward procedure - no bone graft needed. The dentist came highly recommended and did a brilliant job.
Haven't regretted a single penny after struggling with a denture for several months.
Yes I suppose in theory the actual "tooth" can break or need replacing at some point but unless you are very unlucky the actual metal implant in the bone (the most expensive bit) should last a lifetime.
Good luck!

September1013 · 09/01/2025 18:22

That sounds about right - it’s usually around £2-3k per tooth for implants.

Heatherjayne1972 · 09/01/2025 18:24

Sounds like the Cheaper side of normal

FieldsofDreamingBubbles · 09/01/2025 18:43

I know someone who has dental impacts in the UK

The head scan was £500 one at a specialist location

The implants have to be inserted

The teeth have to be made special person who make teeth

You are paying for

Anesthetic
Dentist (training & knowledge)
Dental nurse
Dental premises, heating, lights, water, electric
Paper work, billing
Their insurance

Aftercare

I would not recommend going abroad

That is why prices are high

Brody77 · 09/01/2025 19:10

Another dentist here, it’s 3.5k at our practice starting cost which can go up if sinus lift etc required.

LadySnoresMuchly · 09/01/2025 19:15

Mine was £3500 for one tooth. The whole thing took a year from start to finish.

CherryRipe1 · 10/01/2025 11:19

I've had mine 30 years, no issues. So worth it as friends with dentures & bridges have had problems. My dentist is a max fax surgeon & teaches implantation at a university. It's expensive but really worth it considering what's involved. I had bone grafts too.

If you don’t mind me asking how awful was it all? I’m convinced I’ll need this in the future.

Lemonem · 10/01/2025 12:14

I paid approx £3k for one implant
