Who has right of way at this mini roundabout?

I’ll do my AIBU after a few comments

Who has right of way here?

Terrible diagrams, because we're already wondering whether in the second diagram Car A is still indicating right as they're intending on going back from whence they came.

Middaymatters · 09/01/2025 16:19

If A hasn’t moved before C arrives, C has right of way (over A)

BarbaraHoward · 09/01/2025 16:20

A but we have a similar roundabout and I always wait for C if I can see them as I arrive since they're to my right and moving and it's the pragmatic thing to do. Everyone else does too.

ploppiness · 09/01/2025 16:20

Still A - were they making a U turn or actually turning right? The Highway Code recommends avoiding making a U turn at a mini roundabout.

TequilaNights · 09/01/2025 16:20

After 2nd photo, still car A, they are already on the roundabout, B is clear to follow straight, c should use caution that a and b are going ahead, but otherwise clear to move onto the roundabout.

Rickrolypoly · 09/01/2025 16:20

You give way to the car on your right, so it would depend on the actual position on each car. From the diagram, it looks as if A can go without impeeding C as C is far away. So A would go first.

LIZS · 09/01/2025 16:23

Still A, is its indicator right or left at that point? C needs to wait to ensure A is not going back round if still indicating right.

Same- in reality I don’t want to crash the car so I would wait just in case I can’t get round in time and they’re a bit gung ho and consider their right of way starts from the roundabout run in

It's a mini roundabout, so no need to change indicator to left to exit.

OK, ending the drip feed.

I go to this place twice a day. Once in a while Car C is driven by an aggressive male who should be driving 30 MPH, but isn’t, and they do not slow down at all before this roundabout. They go full speed ahead and just drive over the white mini roundabout.

Unfortunately this has happened a couple of times. It’s really dangerous. Yes, of course I give way and try and be safe, but that usually ends up with 3 cars, A, B and C all stopped waiting for one to go.

The guy was quite away away. Am I supposed to stop and wait for him to turn up? Doesn’t that mean the person behind me is going to beep me to go?

Anyway, I just had a verbal confrontation with C who told me people like me cause accidents (I was clear of him before he got to the roundabout, no chance of him hitting me, but he did the 10 second beep thing) so I stopped, wound down my window and told him actually he’s the one in the wrong, should slow down before any roundabout and should consult the Highway Code.

Obviously I’m going to be super cautious there from now on but only because aggressive male driver arseholes are rife around here.

I just wanted to know if I was factually correct.

SnakesAndArrows · 09/01/2025 16:27

Nobody has right of way.

Everybody gives priority
a) to the car already on their roundabout and then
b) on their right, unless they can complete their manoeuvre without the car on the right having to take evasive action.

In your second diagram Car A should either be

  • indicating right to go back into the road they came out of, so Car C gives priority to Car A
  • or indicating left to exit the roundabout, in which case Car C can proceed, carefully.
DogInATent · 09/01/2025 16:27

I just wanted to know if I was factually correct.

You already gave him the advice how to check this.
(consult the Highway Code)

BarbaraHoward · 09/01/2025 16:28

Yeah you're grand OP.

I had similar on a similar roundabout recently - I went right from A as another car went left from C, and the car behind C beeped me because he had to brake for the roundabout. 🙄 Pay no heed.

It really doesn't matter, rule #1 of driving

"Don't get involved in someone else's accident"

ReflectAndLearn · 09/01/2025 16:30

Not a u turn, turning right to be going down road that C is coming up. Indicators on.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 09/01/2025 16:31

@ReflectAndLearn I actually dislike mini roundabouts for the reason that cars do uturns but there isnt really enough room and they end up having to reverse a bit to get round!!! I just go up and round the block. no chance of an accident then.

OK I see. My point above stands. You must give priority to car C so you can only enter the roundabout provided you’re not going to get in his way. Because he’s a monumental twat and not obeying the rules of the road himself you’re technically (but not morally) in the wrong.

if you know he’s an arse just grit your teeth and let him get on with it. Always ignore impatient fools behind you - they can’t see what you can see.

edited for terribly typos.

ReflectAndLearn · 09/01/2025 16:36

OK, thanks everyone.

I will be taking more care at this turning in future. I am a little jittery as a couple of years ago someone drunk crashed into me and I got injured. It spooks me if someone beeps me like this.

OP posts:
myplace · 09/01/2025 16:37

C regularly leans on the horn at A because C is speeding. If C lifted his foot as he should, everyone would get round quicker.

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/01/2025 16:39

Car A

HawkinsTigers · 09/01/2025 16:39

clevercloggsadventures · 09/01/2025 16:12

Car C, because they are going faster as they don’t need to slow down to check if it’s clear on their right…or A if they are checking carefully how fast C is going

You’re wrong. This is a roundabout and car C isn’t even there yet but would still need to give way to their right.

Car A has right of way

They beeped at you because they’re a bellend not because you were in the wrong

denhaag · 09/01/2025 16:53

Since someone drove into me at a mini roundabout I am very, very cautious. I deal with priority uncertainty by waiting. This might mean I give way to a car when I could have driven, but it avoids the situation where I've entered the roundabout and another driver (aggressive uninsured male driver as it happens) then enters it at speed and runs into me.

KrisAkabusi · 09/01/2025 17:18

You were technically correct until this point:

Anyway, I just had a verbal confrontation with C who told me people like me cause accidents (I was clear of him before he got to the roundabout, no chance of him hitting me, but he did the 10 second beep thing) so I stopped, wound down my window and told him actually he’s the one in the wrong, should slow down before any roundabout and should consult the Highway Code.

If you stopped to talk to car C you were holding up car B and other traffic!
