I want to paint my kitchen red. Tried a tester pot and Dh says it looks like I’ve committed mass murder and not cleaned up after me. I think it’s jolly. Very old house, quite dark though with low ceilings and exposed beams, stone walls etc. Maybe it could he construed as ‘spooky’. Depends on your take on it I guess. I really want a deep rich colour feature wall. What colour would you go? Should I stick to my guns (excuse the pun) and stay with the red? Edited to say yes to first couple of replies- you’re right, I must consider him too. He’s not prepared to suggest a colour tho as he got free reign on his own study. Just comments unhelpfully. He’s very old tho so he says he’s fully entitled to be curmudgeonly from time to time. So up to me. Maybe on reflection this is why I want a jolly colour. Or Oh my God, stream of consciousness thinking now, am I trying to bait him for mild entertainment???? No - I’m old too - but I’m not that cantankerous. Ahh the fun of being a pair of retirees.

How are you both at controlling hunger? They say red stimulates appetite - that’s why McD have it splashed all around.
Also it’s supposed to increase feelings of anger. How about picking the colour as a highlight - red curtains or blinds for instance?

We had a 80s house that, when we moved into it, had bright red walls in the kitchen. The floor was black and white chequered tiles so it kind of worked in a 50’s diner sort of way. After a year or so we painted it sage green, but after a while I missed the red so I ended up repainting it the same shade of red because it actually felt right. No regrets.

We renovated a Georgian house some years ago and it was amazing when we stripped down through layers of paint and paper and found the colour which we were about to use in that room. Both the kitchen (soft citrus/olive green) and our bedroom (clear, mid sky blue) had exactly the same colours right at the bottom on the plaster.
Sometimes a room just seems to call out for a particular colour.

Also forgot to add why not consider burgundy it's nice and more pleasant

We once painted our bedroom burgundy. It was nice in the evening but I couldn't bear to wake up to that colour, and it was soon changed to pale pink.
Sunshiny yellow is nice in a kitchen.

Why do a colour DH doesn't like? Surely you need a compromise. I'd go for a similar tone but in green or blue.

Red 'makes' people angry and on edge, you want something calming or bringing the outside in perhaps.

Edited

Red makes people angry? What a load of tosh! Lol! That was debunked years ago, which is why insurance companies no longer penilise red car owners. My living room has a lot of red (including a red carpet), as does my kitchen and I find both of them lovely and calming. I certainly never feel angry whilst in either room! 🤣

HiEarthlings · 12/01/2025 01:49

Who spends most time in the kitchen? If you husband rarely ventures in there, then I'd say stick to your guns! However, if he spends an equal amount of time in there as you then it needs to be something you both like, really.

JaneBannock · 12/01/2025 01:55

He lives there too and has a say in your living space

Comprimise and don't be such a bully

@Pippyls67

This is a beautiful calming and relaxing shade of red. I highly recommend it.

I find red cosy, luxurious and intimate (by which I don't mean sexually)

If you went with it, it'd seem spiteful. If you love the color red, would you consider red accents like fridge, range handles and whatnot? Or does he dislike the color red in general for decorating. My wife's also team red but I don't think she wants red walls. Curtains, utensils and other stuff? Sure.
I'm a big fan of florescent purple/green. But that can get tacky really fast if you're not careful.

Towishwelltoall · 12/01/2025 08:45

You choose colours and clothes to "please" others (= is socially amicable): You choose food to please yourself (=what suits your body's requirements and tastes).

I had red sparkly surfaces and light wood doors in my kitchen with spotlights in the wood above the floor (bottom
of cupboards - can’t remember what they are called!!) . Loved it. Make a statement you can always paint over if it doesn’t work

We have always known them be called kick boards 🙂

Exactly that. Had a brain fart and couldn’t for the life of me remember what they were called !!

WoolySnail · 12/01/2025 13:58

@Elzibub it happens to us all 😁

"Penilise"
This made me laugh. I just imagined the insurance company sneaking over your house while you sleep and drawing penises on you and/or your car.

Do you have pics of your red sparkly kitchen? I'm not a fan of red, but it's my wife's favorite color. If it makes her happy, especially since I don't find the idea offensive, I'd support it.
Then again, the kitchen is more my domain than hers. BRIGHT PURPLE AND GREEN EVERYTHING INCOMING

Pippyls67 · 13/01/2025 18:18

Final update lovely readers - it’s painted! I went with F&B Breakfast room green on just the one wall. A cream painted dresser full of my Portmeirion on said wall. It looks gorgeous together. Dh has conceded it does rather show the crockery collection to its best advantage and it all looks ‘quite pretty’. I’m very pleased. Thank you to everyone for voting and for all your opinions and suggestions. They were very much appreciated.

@Pippyls67 we’d love a picture please!

Pippyls67 · 14/01/2025 11:27

For a particular personal reason I don’t want to post an actual picture of our kitchen so please forgive me. These pictures represent exactly the vibe tho. They are near as damn it.

I need that Portmeirion watering can. That style looks lovely but I can't deny I'm disappointed not to see a glimpse of red
