Did they reveal the gender?

Posting here for traffic

we went for a scan at 32 weeks because the growth chart wasn’t following the trend fully. All is fine from the scan measurement.

We don’t know the gender so was asked to look away during part of the scan, in the next couple of minutes the sonorgrapher said either ‘he’s’ or ‘his’…. something along the lines of ‘anyway, his measurements are all looking good’
then went back to referring to it as ‘baby’

we both picked up on it separately & mentioned it to one another the next day.

Do you think the sonorgrapher has slipped up & it’s a big or do you think it’s common for them to mistakenly use pronouns sometimes because they see so many babies

Ps: we do refer to the baby as ‘he’ ourselves; even though we don’t know. Although I’m not sure we said he in the room

Can't tell without asking the sonorgrapher can you?

XjustagirlX · 08/01/2025 05:24

This happened for my first baby. The doctor clearly referred to a ‘hé’ but she was actually a girl.

I have since asked a somographer and they said that it can depend what babies they have already seen that day or then if they personally have daughters or sons.

don’t think anything of it.

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 08/01/2025 05:28

I think they say that so they don't say 'it'. I wouldn't take anything from it.

MrsN3 · 08/01/2025 06:08

The is happened to me at a 35week growth scan, during the consultant appointment after we mentioned our daughters birth weight and consultant kept referring to baby as a “she” so we thought the surprise was over and we knew it was a girl but weeks later our little boy was born. I think as we’d mentioned our daughter they used “she”.

You’ll have to report back once baby is born to let us all know if it’s a he or she!

Good luck with birth and enjoy the rest of pregnancy ❤️

I'm a midwife and I call all babies he if I don't know the sex. I think it's just because I have boys I naturally come out with he.

Middleagedbeige · 08/01/2025 07:00

We didn’t know the gender of our twins and quite a few times (we had two-weekly scans), the sonographer referred to either one as he. Lo and behold we had twin boys.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/01/2025 07:03

Must be quite challenging, when the medical staff are trying to concentrate on the important aspects of the scan, for them also to have to remember not to slip up with pronouns. My take-away from the scan would be relief that all was well with the baby!

Lightswitchup · 08/01/2025 07:04

Not necessarily. Ours said ‘he’ at one point and she was a girl.

MaterCogitaVera · 09/01/2025 11:11

Could it have been “these measurements”? - I’d just assume that, if I were you.

longapple · 09/01/2025 11:50

At the start of one of my appointments the sonographer said "just to warn you, I always call babies 'he' during scan appointments, I trained myself to do it so I wouldn't slip. Please tell me if you want me to tell you the gender and I will, but whichever it is I'll still keep calling them 'he' even if I've just told you it's a girl"

Livelaughlurgy · 09/01/2025 11:53

My midwife said missie is taking her time and I nearly passed out, I started asking is it a girl but she said that's just what she says. He's a boy.

ForeverPombear · 09/01/2025 11:54

This happened with my sister, the baby was referred to as a 'he', turns out it was a little girl after weeks of thinking she was a boy.

We can’t remember the exact line she said but was ‘he’, ‘him’ or ‘his’ etc

both of us heard it but didn’t say anything till hours after

One of the doctors said ‘she’ during my son’s scan. Spooked me because we didn’t know what we are having and generally most people tend to default to ‘he’ or ‘baby’ rather than she but obviously didn’t mean anything.

RandomUser987654321 · 09/01/2025 12:58

Cheers everybody. Will update in 7 more weeks haha!

Oh god waiting for the day a sonographer is sued for ruining the gender reveal party 🙄

mummylove24 · 09/01/2025 13:01

“He” is just standard, better than saying “it”
Congratulations ❤️

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 09/01/2025 13:16

Focus on the medical aspects of the scan and not your baby's genitalia. That's what the sonographer was trying to do.

Yes. I imagine it's frustrating -- a sonographer is checking for normal growth, limb and organ defects, indications of anything abnormal, and will be in the very difficult position of being the first person to indicate anything wrong, and some parents to be are entirely fixated on whether the baby is male or female!

OP, surely you were just thrilled your scan showed that whatever was thought to be wrong wasn't, and the sex of your baby was a total afterthought?

Mermaidsarereal · 09/01/2025 13:34

I'm sure I read in a baby book when I was pregnant (many moons ago!) that a lot of doctors refer to baby as 'he'. Maybe don't go buying a load of blue clothes yet haha.

Timetochillnow · 09/01/2025 13:37

Student medic from the 80’s here, and all babies were called he, as she meant the mum

Maddy70 · 09/01/2025 13:38

When I had mine they usually refered to the baby as him I had girls. I think it's s generic term

ChristmasKelpie · 09/01/2025 13:54

All of mine were referred to as he by medical staff, it is just habit for some.

AllEndeavour · 09/01/2025 14:08

They called my daughter 'he' in the scan too. All the best for the rest of your pregnancy.
