Team struggling with workload

I am part of large department with several subdivisions. We finally were allocate part time employee who has decided to leave. That means that my small team who are already struggling are even worse off. I can just about offer development opportunities to my team members but my own development is very limited as we simply don't have the capacity to meet business needs. We are just about to deliver acceptable quality work but there are lots of issues, we are far from the level of quality we should be.

I have two options. Go straight to the big boss and say that in order for us to deliver what he's expecting we need more resource, or keep on going to my direct boss and keep on asking for the same or do both? Problem my direct boss has already told me multiple times we are not getting a new employee, even other subdivisions of our department have no issues getting it.

I am thinking of looking for a new job so not sure if it's worth my worry/struggle but obviously who knows how long job search might take.

I'd go above your boss's head and state that you're aware of at least 1/2 good member of staff in your team who is considering leaving (you don't have to say it's you) due to the workload and frustration at not being allocated extra resource.

That it's time consuming to recruit and is it really true what boss says that additional resource just isn't possible?

One thing to add: you don't have to choose between looking for another job and trying to improve things where you are - you can do both, and I think in your situation I would

@MuggleMe I think I'm just bit nervous in terms of how to present it. I would expect my current manager to have my back in this situation but he doesn't. So in a way I do feel I would be undermining him by doing this. My big boss could very easily say why don't you go to your direct manager on this. So I'm not too sure how to handle this.

@dcsp - you are right. I don't have to just give up on current job and concentrate on job search. I can certainly do both at the same time.
