Advice needed for backless dress with big boobs

supertayto66 · 07/01/2025 08:31

I got my wedding dress a few months ago and loved it initially. The shop staff and my friends said it will be fine with a sewn in bra or body tape. But the more I think about it, the more I panic and want to change it. The dress is beautiful but it is backless, with straps. Will I be able to comfortably wear it while being supported? If so can anyone advise on suitable bra?? At the moment I really want to buy a new dress and it's getting me down. Help.

Could you change into another dress for the dancing later on?

fortheloveofcollies · 07/01/2025 09:44

@supertayto66 - honestly don't panic. Speak to your seamstress if your fitting is a while away then send them some photos of you wearing it and let them know your worries. They will be honest if they can do it or not.

My seamstress didn't even bat an eye, they do it all the time. Although she did have to buy larger cups in for me as she only had up to F. I did also have to have an additional fitting squeezed in to make it perfect (lying flat around boobs wise not support) but I genuinely didn't think about my dress falling or anything all day.

There is a product called perky pear which is supposed to be good for bigger boobs.

Is it a very structured dress - like the bodice would stand up on its own? If so then probably sewn in bra cups will provide enough support once fitted as pp said. However, if it’s a thinner or more flowing kind of bodice then that’s unlikely to work.

Andrasa · 07/01/2025 11:34

I had to have an additional eight lots of boning added to the front of my dress to keep everything supported without a bra! Worked fine with my style of dress but depends on material etc

curious79 · 07/01/2025 11:36

now is the time to buy:

  • different bras that can be low, and experiment with what could work under your dress. I ended up cutting up a bra and sewing the bits I wanted into a dress with thin straps
  • trying different versions of those boob sticker things - there are some that are for bigger baps
JC03745 · 07/01/2025 11:44

OP- Can you post a pic of the back of the dress so we know how low it goes? Does it have shoulder straps? We might have suggestions of suitable basques/low back bras etc.

I have large boobs, but even when smaller, none of those stick on things were any good. IMO- only good if you boobs are still perky with no loose skin!

Stick on bra stickers are great (painful removing however!). Try NOOD. Your boobs will not move unless you’re doing a highland fling.

Absolutely useless if have big boobs

ChristmasFluff · 07/01/2025 11:56

I wore a corset with a strapless dress, and that was definitely a mimimum for me (30GG). No way would I have considered backless, they could stitch in metal boob cups and there'd still be too much movement, because of No Support At The Back.

CheerfulBunny · 07/01/2025 12:05

A proper seamstress will be able to sort you out, I reckon. I found a brilliant one who altered the bodices two evening dresses to fit me. She was amazing, she knew exactly what needed to be changed immediately. People like that are incredibly skilled and will advise you what can and can't be done. Good luck - hope you get sorted and can wear your lovely dress without worrying x

Redcrayons · 07/01/2025 12:07

I got bra extenders for a bridesmaid dress and wouldn’t recommend. The dress dipped to just below my shoulder blades, if your dress goes lower than that, then I think you’d probably still see the strap. Not comfortable, and not that supportive. I was conscious of them the whole time.

Tape is also useless for big boobs.

amoreoamicizia · 07/01/2025 12:20

I did find a low back strapless bra meant for wedding dresses I was looking a few years ago, I'll try and dig it out for you.

Backless dresses and boobs over a 34aa don't work.
Even with taping and support, they will look like saucepan lids as they spread across your chest.
Be comfy, it's a long day and you don't want to be hitching them up every few minutes!

RampantIvy · 07/01/2025 12:31

who do they think can wear them? Only late teens, early twenties girls with A/B cup,

I could. Not everyone has ginormous boobs.
I won't see 60 again and don't need a bra. No droopage here.

supertayto66 · 07/01/2025 14:40

Thank you all, I now feel much worse than before about it but appreciate all of the honest opinions and ideas. I'm am going to try some of the ideas given but if I'm not comfortable I think I will I consider changing the dress :(

It annoys me that clothes designs so often ignore breasts. All these dresses without built-in support that also can't be worn with a bra, who do they think can wear them? Only late teens, early twenties girls with A/B cup, at a guess. I don't have large breasts anymore and even now with a B cup I'm not going braless under any circumstances. 😐 It's a total disregard for the female form.

Edited

Well I don't know what kind of boobs everyone else has, but I'm 49 and a 30F and could easily go braless.

I am a 28F and wore a backless dress all day yesterday (with no bra). It worked fine.

JC03745 · 07/01/2025 14:52

Another idea- could the back of the dress be sewn up higher and if needed, a pearl/lace/buttoned decoration to cover it, and add a zip to the side or down the back? I'm not a seamstress- so this might not be an option at all or might cost more than selling and getting something else.

Would this be low enough?

Thank you yes I thought of this but I will have to ask my seamstress what she thinks as I'm not too sure .

And thanks for the link, that seems to be the lowest one I've seen and may possibly work!

You don't wear a bra with a wedding dress. I'm a G cup and my dress was backless. At your wedding dress fittings they sew bra cups in and fit the dress perfectly so you are fully supported. I was comfortable and supported all day. I would never normally wear backless as sticky bras are useless.

I wore a bra when I got married but avoided choosing backless, strapless or transparent styles. It meant walking out of most bridal shops before I’d even tried anything on! I don’t know why so many wedding dresses are made to be uncomfortable and awkward for brides to wear.

I agree with the suggestion to add a small panel at the back to cover a bra.

Only go up to a G cup

Yes but I think op has considerably bigger bosoms than a d cup.
