To warn you about the Domestika scam

Hi - I thought Mumsnet might be a good site to post about this as it has such a big reach. Domestika deletes any comments on their social media trying to warn people of the scam. There was a Facebook group called Domestika Scam, later renamed Exposing Domestika which was supporting (I think?) 1000s of people who had been scammed but Domestika started lawsuits against the admins and the group has been shut down (this is what I understand to have happened anyway - I'm not on Facebook so wasn't part of the group)

Domestika is an online learning platform, lots of art/craft/design courses etc. I did quite a few courses with them over the last few years. I really enjoyed the courses, teachers are great, they were only a few pounds each. It was a lovely online "place".

But over the last year Domestika have started using dark patterns. They are selling courses for say 99p but people unknowingly also get signed up for a month's free trial. I think it might show somewhere when you pay for the course you want but it's very deliberately hidden and you don't get any email notification or anything to say you're on the trial and you don't have to click anything to sign up for it. Then after a month they take the cost of a year's membership from your bank with no warning or without you consenting to it (around £100). They just send an email say a day later confirming membership. Even people who actually did mean to sign up for the trial are finding that even if they opt out of membership well before the month is over the money is still taken from their account. It's impossible to talk to a human in customer service and people just get an automatic reply saying they chose to do the trial so there are no refunds. I found a way to get a refund but I think I must have been lucky as most people don't seem to be getting one.

Have a look at reviews of Domestika on Trustpilot - you can see that 1000s of people all over the world have been scammed in this way. Some stories are very sad as people very much couldn't afford to have this amount of money unexpectedly disappear from their accounts.

Just wanted to warn people - if you are buying a course from Domestika just be careful to check that they haven't added the free trial (unless you want it of course) and maybe you can delete that part. I mean obviously we should check what we're paying for online anyway - I guess I just became trusting and negligent as I'd bought so many courses from them over the years with no issue - lesson well and truly learned! If you have bought a course from Domestika recently, keep an eye on your bank account.

Also just to add that people who did intend to get the trial found they didn't actually get access to that many courses with membership anyway.

This has just happened to me. I stupidly signed up for a 99p course, without realising I had also signed up to a Domestika Plus trial too, I thought I had declined any trial offer. I Was charged this morning, $149 (£120) via PayPal, which was completely unexpected and has left me short for the rest of the month, which means I can't buy any heating oil now, I'm a pensioner so on limited income. I explained all this on their contact form, and received an obvious AI response that if I was contacting them about a refund, to read their policy, (Shows they don't read the contact form). According to their refund policy, there are absolutely no refunds, even though I cancelled within a few hours of the payment being taken. I don't know what to do now. I expect I did receive some emails, but as I didn't know I had signed up, I would have treated them as spam. That'll teach me

So sorry this happened to you @Fizzer57 It's absolutely disgusting of them to do this to people and leave them struggling financially. I really hope you get your money back 💐

I wonder if it's worth contacting Citizen's Advice to see if they might be able to help you? I'm so sorry this has happened to you, it's so dishonest.

I had thought about buying some of their courses a while ago but I checked on Trust Pilot, and so many pp were talking about this scam. It's always useful to check there if you've got any doubts about companies advertising online, especially when the offers seem too good to be true!

I just went to their website and it does say what the charges are when you buy

Contact your bank for a chargeback on the grounds you didn’t know you signed up for a subscription, they will grant the money beyond the first transaction back. The more people do this, the more likely it is they will get shut down as it’s against visa and Mastercard terms of service.

As an aside is ‘unlimitedly’ a word?

They are displaying it more transparently now - maybe they've been forced to - but that's a fairly recent change. There still seems to be an issue that even when people cancel in time they can't get a refund.

Hi!! thank you so much about this message. Just got this exact experience with them which is a nasty surprise and a rude awakening since I've used some of their corses for a while. Can you please share how you got a refund? I've tried contacting them and using PayPal dispute system to no avail. seems like as soon as you have a problem their lovely customer service disappears. Any advice is appreciated!

Lonelyscarecrow · 03/05/2025 11:11

Hi @Pensacolalove so sorry that happened to you. If you go back to the message I wrote on the 6th of February at 14.35 I describe the steps I did on the website that got a refund. Good luck I hope it works for you. If not, some people seemed to eventually get help from PayPal if they kept contacting them (but took ages - PayPal definitely not keen to help), or maybe better to go directly to your bank. Good luck.

Edit to say also make sure you've removed Domestika as a payee on your PayPal account or they might take more money in the future.

Their courses are totally rubbish though, at least all of the art ones. You can find much better drawing tutorials for free all over Youtube.

Saa50 · 04/11/2025 19:50

Unfortunately It happened for me and domestika changed me $329 without any notification 😔

Lonelyscarecrow · 05/11/2025 11:43

Oh no - so sorry to hear that. They are getting worse and worse 😡 In the beginning they were taking around 100 dollars/pounds/euro etc from people, which was bad enough.

I hope you can get your money back. I'm a bit out of touch now with online support groups talking about this eg on Facebook but I'm sure there are some around. 7 thousand mostly negative reviews about Domestika on Trustpilot now - you are not alone.
