Car Rental Companies

I recently booked a car rental through a company that combs through several car hire companies to give you the best price. (A bit like booking.com for cars). They completely cocked up our booking and caused us a a major inconvenience. When I complained they said we were late (we were 49 minutes late). As a result of being late, they actually did not have to supply us with a car at all (per their customer services). We asked for a car that could fit 4 suitcases and 5 people. The car we received had boot space for two suitcases, meaning that we had to send two of our party to our destination on public transport so we could transport all of our luggage. The return journey involved me relying relatives to help us get back to the airport with our passengers and our luggage.
Is it reasonable that they dismiss our request for recompense out of hand?

What does your contract say about being late?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 06/01/2025 20:22

I've heard so many horror stories about using these sites! There's a reason they're so much cheaper than going direct - they put a bunch of loopholes in the contract to make money. Ultimately you need to check your T&Cs on lateness but I think if you were going to do something/complain it would've been there when you picked the car up, not afterwards.

To Okay - sorry, can’t figure out how to reply to a comment, but the contract only says late,, with no definition of late. I booked pick up for 10am, and asked for pick-up at 10:49 am on the day. Does that seem unreasonably late for an international flight arrival?

You hard to ask for a bus to bring you to the car hire Office, that wasn’t in the airport itself

Well, I don't think the contract you've ended up with is at all reasonable, but unfortunately I dont think you've got much chance of compensation.

My experience with airport rentals, especially of they know what flight you are coming in on, and they often do ask, is that they will wait if the flight is delayed. You've booked the car, so unless they've helpfully given it to someone else in the time between when you were expected and when you actually got to them, where is it? Secondly, whatever time you put, you are going to be charged for a daily rate, so we would always book earlier than needed until later than needed, as long as it didn't go into the next 24 hours. We've never been caught like you.

Also what kind of car did they fob you off with that only had room for two suitcases?

None of this helps you, I'm afraid, the only advice, as someone else said, is to avoid these scraping sites, cheapest always comes at a cost!

Well, it sounds like you've been caught out unfortunately - it will be deliberately undefined in order to catch people out. It's lucky they still had a car around for you, and since you took it I don't think you'll get anywhere complaining. These companies don't tend to put a huge amount of effort into their customer satisfaction as they'll always have a rotating cast of new customers.

In future I'd read all the T&Cs (not being goady, just honest - if I go for a 'bargain'/cheap company I always do because I know there will be loopholes somewhere!) or go with a car hire better known for its customer service - AVIS for example costs a bomb but will do lots for customer service/bending rules for customers.

We were definitely caught out. I do still feel aggrieved. When I went on their website, i wasn’t necessarily looking for the cheapest rental, but rather, having no experience of having rented a car in that country, thought that a site that aggregates other sites, might offer some level of reassurance.

What I’d like to warn other people about, is that you are really limited in your ability to complain about 3rd party bookings. I didn’t realise the implications of dealing with third parties, and it really means that you can’t nail down who is responsible for an issue if something goes wrong, I screwed up somewhere, but I don’t know what I did wrong

I had a really smooth experience using car rental Dubai last year....booked online, picked up at the airport, and dropped off without any drama. They didn’t try to sneak in extra charges, and the car was in great condition.

I always take photos of everything at pickup and return just in case, but they were professional and fair the whole way through. Made things way less stressful for our trip.

That’s a really frustrating experience, unfortunately, many third-party aggregators prioritize volume and pricing over reliability. The “late pickup” clause is often used as a loophole, even when the delay is completely reasonable due to things like flight arrivals or baggage delays. Most of these comparison sites don’t actually control the inventory, so when they overbook or miscommunicate with local suppliers, the customer ends up stuck without options.

I’ve found that booking directly with a rental company that manages its own fleet makes a big difference. For instance: peacock-rentals.com/ focuses on transparent terms and flexible scheduling, especially for travelers dealing with flight delays or group luggage needs. They clearly list capacity and pickup policies upfront, which helps avoid those last-minute surprises.

If your contract didn’t define what “late” meant, that’s a gray area worth challenging, 49 minutes isn’t unreasonable at all for an airport pickup. I’d recommend escalating it through a formal written complaint citing ambiguity in the contract wording. And for future trips, going with a direct provider rather than a broker can save a lot of stress, even if it costs a little more upfront.
