Can I ask a potential buyer about the property they have for sale?

We have accepted an offer but the buyers are yet to sell their house. They say it is a three bed, garden, parking and will sell well. However, it has been a long time now and I want to ask details about it to see if it is worth putting our house back on the market or seeing this out. We know the rough location but it may be in a bad area or run down or something. They are with a different estate agent. Would we be overstepping the mark asking for their address?

I would have expected your estate agent to have checked this out. It’s usual now to have to be on the market, even actually sold, before being able to view.

Randomontheinternet25 · 06/01/2025 17:36

Weird imo
What is the timescale?
Do you have your next property sorted?
My first house sold three time before I actually sold it
Selling house in the UK is a long and boring process

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/01/2025 17:36

The estate agent should already be doing this.

ShodAndShadySenators · 06/01/2025 17:42

They're not proceedable, so shouldn't have made an offer for anything yet. You are well within your rights to continue marketing your property, as they can't buy it without selling theirs first! A lot of estate agents won't let people view unless they're in a viable position - I suppose the market being dog-slow has turned that around now. It's also unusual to have taken it off the market for an buyer without funds.

I would be contacting my own EA pronto and asking them to put it back on and market it proactively with a view to get offers from people who can proceed.

AgreeableDragon · 06/01/2025 18:23

I agree with @ShodAndShadySenators ! They are not procedable. Get the house back on the market (with a different agent).

WonderingWanda · 06/01/2025 18:30

Unusual that you stopped marketing your property for unproceedable buyers. I don't think you need to ask them any details about your house just let them know you are going to put yours back on the market to try and find a proceedable buyer.

BlueMum16 · 06/01/2025 18:32

100% leave your market available for sale.

You can accept multiple offers but until someone is in a position to proceed they're not worth shit.

Your estate agent should have told you this. Get them marketing your now. New year is a great time as people start to look now Christmas is done.

Garedenhelp · 06/01/2025 18:37

Your not unreasonable to talk to the estate agents about putting the house back on the market.

But having a nosey at their house isn't going to give you any more information, if it's run down or in a bad area if its priced accordingly it will be just as saleable as good house in a good area with the price tag to match.

WallaceinAnderland · 06/01/2025 18:39

You can't ask for their address. If they are not under offer yet I'm not sure why you took yours off the market. Get it back on the market.

Hello, I work in house sales / agency. You don’t have to know anything about your buyers house, you just have to know their position. Their position is that they have a house to sell which is on the market, probably need a mortgage and have offered you X amount. It’s fine to accept that offer, but it doesn’t mean you have to take your property off the market. Your agent should have told you this. You can accept the offer but on condition that their house sells, in the meantime you will continue to accept viewings. It sounds a bit like laziness from your agent. I’d contact the agency you’re using and say that you’re concerned about the timescale of your buyers own house sale and you’d like to continue to market your property, with a view to finding buyers in a better position. If progress is made on your buyers house then you’re happy to proceed with the sale to them.
If the buyers don’t like this and pull out then you can just re market your property, maybe look at co listing with another agent or just moving to a different agency and explain the situation you were in.
When we were trying to buy a house last year the Estate Agent told us there’s no point putting an offer in until we had accepted an offer on our own house. Makes sense to me!

Everyone thinks their house will sell quickly even though ironically they are looking to sell it! Put your own back on the market. They are probably asking too much for it but are deluded enough to think it’s a fair price.
