Diarrhoea

Hello, my almost 6 month old has had diarrhoea for 3 weeks. I have spoke to 111 twice and I have been to the GP who isn’t concerned about dehydration… or anything for that matter. I had to make my GP send a stool sample.
I feel so worried my baby has had 10 stools a day for 3 weeks some watery some stringy some mucasy some yellow some brown and ranges inbetween. My GP isn’t worried but scrubbing several baby grows a day and having my baby in pain as she poos is very sad. She is also waking up in the night screaming to poo. I am at a loss.

Have you started to wean her and something is upsetting her stomach?

toomuchfaff · 05/01/2025 21:58

It has to be something that's going in, that doesn't agree with. What is she having?

Injectionstoslim · 05/01/2025 21:59

Have you just started weaning? If yes then I would stop for a bit.

Soak the clothes in napisan.

TMGM · 05/01/2025 22:29

That’s definitely not right, ask to speak to a different GP, get a second opinion? You could also go to A&E and they should see you, had a similar (much less severe!) issue with my son at that age and was advised to do this.

Xxxsam · 05/01/2025 22:37

Could she have a non-ige allergy? My daughter is allergic to milk but doesn't instantly react - it takes 2-24 hours.Diarrhea is one of her symptoms if she's had any. Have you introduced her to any new foods?

She has been on kendamil formula since 2 weeks old; once I stopped breast feeding so nearly 5 and a half months on kendamil but problems have only just started…

What was it in the end if you don’t mind me asking? And how old was he?

When did you last speak to the GP about it? I’d push there before going for A&E.

She has been on the same formula all her life and only just stared this at three months? Could it be that delayed?

My son had this at just over a year old, they never found anything wrong and it stopped by itself

Allergies can develop at any time.

You could be a whole host of different things. You really need to see the GP.

He was around the same age as yours, maybe a bit younger, this was last year so my memory is a bit fuzzy but don’t think they found the exact cause. From what I remember he was checked over quite extensively (I’d also saved a couple of pictures and a sample of the poo) and monitored for a bit and then they let us go. We were seen pretty quickly at our A&E but I’m guessing that can vary depending on where you are.

My husband just reminded me, they said it could be specifically due to one of his vaccines, they weren’t sure. But his case was a lot less severe than yours sounds so I think it’s still worth taking her in, better to be safe than sorry when babies are involved.

Has there been any improvement? 10 days is a very long time to have such bad diarrhoea.

I wouldn't start introducing solids while her stomach is like this, it could make things worse. When did the GP send off the stool sample? Did they say how long it will take to come back?

Speedygonzales78 · 07/01/2025 21:30

I've had diarrhoea myself a few times that has lasted a few weeks, a GP told me that you can get a bowel infection similar to a stomach bug but you just get diarrhoea, I felt fine otherwise just diarrhoea! It was a pain ! Hopefully this is the case with your little one but I would keep pushing to get more answers if you are concerned.

ohhh okay thank you for that I didn’t know. I will wait for the stool sample and if no infection I will go back to the GP.

The stool sample was sent on Friday but it hasn’t been processed yet. Hopefully the results will be back and if there is no infection I will try prescribed lactose free milk?

This sounds just like my baby she is ok in herself sometimes in a lot of pain when pushing or pooing :( I am hoping this will show up in the stool sample

Yes! It was the rotavirus jab mine had, maybe a delayed reaction? Although if so it surely shouldn’t last so long.

I would probably hold off weaning until you’re advised, fibre might actually help make the poo more solid, but it could also just mask the issue so she’d seem better when there’s still actually a problem. Could you call your GP or baby health advisor to see what could be best regarding that?

MollyMaeDelise · 11/01/2025 21:06

Hello all,
I went to the GP and was pretty useless again. Stool sample came back clear.
I did read that a baby can get lactose intolerance secondary to rotavirus. At the start of this I was certain she had rotavirus but it lasted 4 weeks so was unsure. I have tried her on lactose free milk in case this was the problem… She is much better!!! Going once a day! Thank you all for your help
